Crafting and Ground Structures

#1
i have read that you (josh) have plans for industrial projects and facilities in the game, my idea is that you can make both space structures and ground structures using a group of maybe 10 or 20 standarized parts that make up the station/base. example: an asteroid mining facility requires mining equipment, 5 hull pieces, 1 generator and 1 crew compartment, drop them into a crafting box and out comes a medium asteroid miner.
there could even be multiple choices when it comes to the result, slight diferences in use (core drilling or droid swarms) and then designing the way it looks before you place it (right click icon, station design, edit the design to your will in the editor, exit, profit.

there is no reason for this not to be able to be placed on planets so you can make a resource gathering base on one of your favourite planets. thugh this is one of the last things you (still josh) should do, concentrate on the space ones.

Hey Josh,

Just had an idea for planetary colonization. Perhaps there can be a capital ship similar to a carrier, which can construct its own ships (similar to the carrier in Homeworld) but has the ability to construct a Colony Lander Module - a kind of central colony command structure than can be dropped from the carrier in orbit through the atmosphere and on to the planet surface near resources such as water, minerals and arable land. This then forms the central hub of the colony and further structures can be built from here (sort of like the command center in Starcraft.)

The carrier can also fabricate parts for a space station/ship yard which can then be constructed in orbit, while the carrier serves as an armed space-station/mobile shipyard able to defend the planet while the colony is built. Once the colony is up and running then the carrier (mother-ship?) can move on to the next planet.

What do you think?

The problem with colonization is that you need to get your people from somewhere.

If a single mothership would need to provide enough people for any meaningful, game-impacting colonization, then this needs to be a huge mothership, and the people on it as horny as rabbits.

On the entire planet, the population increases with more than 6.000.000 people per month. But that's with 7.000.000.000 of us.
There are about half as much deaths as there are births, so we could assume about 12.000.000 people become adults each month. Adults would be chosen to colonize new planets.

Of course, if your colony is only 10.000 people, you'd need to wait a VERY long time before this colony will provide you with any meaningful income/resources. I don't really know how to scale down 7.000.000.000 to 10.000 people. If it's linear you could just divide by 700.000 => 18 adults/month, depending on how much variety there was in ages when the colonization module was filled.
It would be better to somehow conquer or earn a planet, and ship off people from this planet regularly to a colonized planet to increase its genepool and productivity (# inhabitants/usable surface).

Hey Katorone,

Thanks for the comment, I like it! Whilst wild mother-ship porn holds a certain appeal, I was thinking more along the lines of some good ole fashioned mothership cloning vats. Shake, then bake, and voila! Instant colonists! Stick em in the colony lander and drop em in. How 'bout that? :P

And yes, I would also like to pillage an existing colony and enslave it's population too. I'll try anything at least once...

Pfft. You'll never be a politician with that kind of attitude!

You can level it for all I care. We could use a good fresh start. :D
