First Contact: A Forum Game

#1
First Contact
Tuesday, January Third, 1984.

"Ladies and Gentlemen,
At 0134 Zulu, our satellites detected an object moving at incredible speeds over northern Russia.
It was traveling at Mach 10, heading west towards Europe, at an altitude of fifty thousand feet.

"The Russians fired upon it, and landed a number of lucky hits with Surface to Air missiles.
It adjusted it's course northwards, before crashing into Sweden.
It's now sitting in neutral territory, to the south west of Stockholm.

"We have permission from the Swedish Government to investigate the area,
the Russians have disavowed all knowledge of this object and are requesting to send in forces of their own.
We believe they are going to send in their special forces regardless of the outcome of their request.

"So we are sending you in to secure the area, and keep the Russians from capturing this object.
Good Luck."

General David Hall, US Army.
You each play as a Special Forces soldier of any NATO, or Warsaw Pact nation.
There are seven statistics that you get to select for your character.

Reactions: Think you can throw their grenade back at them before it explodes? Or shoot a hostile when he runs past you?
Bravery: Do you need brown pants? Or can you wear white pants without fear of stains?
Throwing: See that target, can you hit it with a grenade, or are you more likely to explode your teammates?
Shooting: Likely to hit the bullseye on a target? Or just the instructor behind you?
Agility: Can you dodge this? Or do you move like a sloth?
Strength: Heavy guns, and teammates. They weigh lots, can you lift them?
Health: Can you take a punch, or are you a glass cannon?

Each stat starts at 1. You get 18 extra points to spend on any statistics you want. Up to the maximum of six on any one. ( Your stats should add to 25 when you are done. )
As you gain ranks, you will be able to buy more points, and get better. And to gain ranks, you have to survive AND kill enemies.
Think you can manage to do both?

This is the calm before a storm, you can feel it.
This mission doesn't sit well with you. Both sides going after the same objective, thats nothing new.
But an unknown object, moving faster than any Fighter craft, that doesn't seem right.
Even the legendary SR-71 only gets to Mach 3.

No, this is something else entirely. And it's giving you the creeps.

The helicopter shudders as it lands in a small field 5 Klicks away from the target's location.
You grab your equipment and exit the vehicle, only to be greeted with floodlights and guns.
It seems every man and his dog is here, looks like this secret that won't stay that way for long.
The Armory:

You can take as much equipment as you want, but be frugal, you can only carry twice your strength in equipment weight.
Your guns come with the first clip in them, but other clips require space too, listed under each weapon is the weight of extra clips for the guns. It might pay to take a few.

Sidearms: 1 Equipment weight, can be switched to without spending actions.
Primary Weapons: 2 Equipment weight, take an action to ready.
Heavy Weapons: 3 Equipment weight, take two actions to fire.
Thrown Weapons: 1 Equipment weight.

Close Range: Close enough to melee an enemy, encompassing distance up to 10m away.
Medium Range: This range encompass 10m - 100m. Most outdoors encounters will be at this distance. It's also the vision limit for night missions.
Long Range: This is for when enemies are just too damn far away. Extending up to a kilometer away.

Close Range weapons get a -4 to hit at Medium Range, and cannot hit at Long Range.
Medium Range weapons get a -2 to hit at Close Range, and a -4 to Hit at Long Range.
Long Range weapons get a -2 to hit at Medium Range, and a -4 to Hit at Close Range.

Single Shot: Shooting this gun ends your turn, slow rate of fire, typical of Sniper Rifles.
Semi-Automatic: Shooting this gun won't end your turn, but it take an action to fire a single bullet.
Burst: You fire multiple bullets at a target, the first gets your full bonus, each round thereafter gets an additional -1 to hit.
Full Auto: Essentially just a long burst, in addition to the penalty above, you also have to take two actions to fire in Full-Auto.

Any shot that misses from a full auto attack, can re-roll against a random unit in close range to the target. It takes an additional -1 to hit when it does so, but can be used to shoot at an entire cluster of enemies.

Splash Damage: Any target within Close Range of where the weapon explodes is hit by this much splash damage.
The target it was thrown at (if it hits) is hit for the full damage of the weapon.
Spoiler:      SHOW
Combat Knife
Melee, Close Range, Sidearm
Deals 1 Damage
Does not count towards Equipment Weight
Either thrown or held, this Knife might just save your life. It's also silent, so there's that.

Pistol
12 Rounds, Semi-automatic, Close Range, Sidearm
Deals 1 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 3 extra clips.
Essentially a peashooter, but when you have no ammo left, it's quicker to grab this than reload.

Hand Cannon
6 Rounds, Single, Close Range, Sidearm
Deals 2 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 3 extra clips.
Heavier bullets, means more stopping power. This gun may actually be useful to stop a home invasion.

Shotgun
6 Rounds, Semi-automatic, Close Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 3 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 3 extra clips. (reloading reloads all 6 rounds at once)
A Pump-Action shotgun, great for close encounters of any kind.

Submachine Gun
30 Rounds, 5 shot Burst, 15 shot Auto, Medium Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 1 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 2 extra clips.
While an SMG doesn't hit hard, it does fire lots of lead at a target, they come in violin cases typically.

Assault Rifle
30 Rounds, Semi-automatic, 3 Shot Burst, 10 Shot Auto, Medium Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 2 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 2 extra clips.
The standard weapon of Riflemen and Freedom Fighters everywhere.

Battle Rifle
15 Rounds, Semi-automatic, Medium Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 3 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 2 extra clips.
For those more worried about hitting and killing their target, than the soldiers who carry Assault Rifles.

Sniper Rifle
5 Rounds, Single Shot, Long Range, Heavy Weapon
Deals 4 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 3 extra clips.
Enough power to punch through bullet proof glass, this chunky gun will come in handy with harder to kill targets.

Autocannon
50 Rounds, 25 Round Auto, Medium Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 3 Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 1 extra clip.
For when a few shots just doesn't cover it. A burst from this gun will happily punch holes in Tanks.

Rocket Launcher
1 Shot, Single, Long Range, Primary Weapon
Deals 5 Damage, 2 Splash Damage
Ammo: 1 weight for 1 extra rocket.
For all your long distance explosive requirements. Or for creating new doors in Buildings. Rocket jumping is not advised.

Frag Grenade
Medium Range, Thrown Weapon
Deals 3 Damage, 2 Splash Damage
Throw this into a building and your squishy problems will all disappear.

High Explosives
Medium Range, Thrown Weapon
Deals 6 Damage, 3 Splash Damage
These High Explosives are designed to breach bunkers, they also work to clear rubble, or cover.

Ballistic Vest
Armor
Reduces Damage taken by 1, for up to 10 hits.
Gives a -1 to Agility while worn.
Covers the Torso.
Does not count towards Equipment Weight
Stopping bullets is a good idea yes?

Helmet
Armor
Reduces Damage taken by 1, for up to 5 hits.
Covers the Head.
Does not count towards Equipment Weight
There really are no downsides to wearing a Helmet, don't forget to bring one!
It seems that things have changed between your initial briefing and your arrival at the Forward Operating Base.

There are Russians, and American soldiers in the same camp, looking suspiciously at each other, grasping their weapons tight.
It seems the Brass has decided to work together for this one. This must be big.

It won't be long now until they announce the mission. You collect your gear and introduce yourself to the nearest officer,
who points you at a large tent. Inside a projector is lighting up a screen, and a few dozen men and women are seated talking softly between themselves.

Looks like it won't be long now.
Everybody is welcome to create a character to join in.
We will get started in a day or so. Feel free to suggest standard equipment if you need anything more than what's in the armory.
And as always I reserve the right to Rule 0 anything I deem unfit for the game.

Age: 24

Description: Trebor Mallarkus grew up in a fairly rich family, the second youngest of seven siblings. There was a large gap between him and his older brothers and sisters, though, and his closest childhood friend growing up was his younger half-sister, Lydia - the illegitimate child of his mother. His father shunned her growing up, and Trebor rushed to her defense many times over the years, standing up to his father again and again until finally his father kicked him out of the house from it. While he has a gentlemanly attitude, he's quite spry and a fairly decent shot.

Name: Sergei Amakrov
Nationality: Russian
Gender: Male
Age: 37
Status: Alive
Description: A seasoned Russian commando, Sergei began his serving life at the age of 14, after leaving his abusive home in hopes of making a better life for himself, detached from his childhood. He worked his way through the Russian military, beginning as a footsoldier, and eventually having command of his own small unit, at the age of 29. He was ejected from the unit at age 36. He does not know the reasoning behind his forced retirement, only that there is now no clear record of his service ever having occurred, with every possible file on him being heavily redacted. After approaching members of his unit, he was told to "believe that he now did not exist", and that whatever happened, the strings were pulled from the highest level. This pushed him to a depressive state, and as his father had done before him, Sergei turned to alcohol, as he struggled to understand what had happened to his flourishing military career. After several weeks passed, he was caught up in a fist fight in a dark bar, where multiple well dressed attackers descended upon him. After being hit across the face with a broken glass bottle, scarring his eye, he pulled a shotgun from behind the bar and killed each of them. As the smoke settled, after downing his drink, a suited man walked through to the bar, looking very out of place. He was accompanied by 2 unmarked, dark clothed soldiers. The suited man offered him a placement in his PMC, of which he did not learn the name of, nor the name of this man. Only the orders that he gave, which he followed, to find his purpose again. The only thing he knew was that they were approached discreetly and privately by the Soviet Union, and that he was sent off to a small village near Stockholm, Sweden.

Name: Stanislaw Malanowski
Nationality: Polish
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Status: Alive
Description: Stanislaw, known as "Stan" or "Ski" to his friends, joined the Polish Army at age 18 after being conscripted. He ended up liking the job, and decided to make a career out of it. He went to Russia for hiss formal military education, and came back an eager lieutenant ready to take on the world. His skill was quickly recognized by his commanders, and he joined the JWK, the Polish special forces, at the behest of High Command. Malanowski was born in Wroclaw to a rather average family. His grandfather fought in World War II against first the Soviets, and later the Nazis. As such, he and his family still holds something of a grudge against both the Russians and Germans. However, he has begun to overcome his ingrained prejudices against them thanks to joint training with the Russians and East Germans- this by no means tempers his dislike of the "Westies," however! He has never actually fought before, however. This is his first "real" deployment, and Malanowski is eager to prove himself to both his Communist peers and his NATO enemies.

Might want to count Ammo too.
Each gun comes with a clip in it, but further clips need to be carried to keep fighting.

Looks good, he won't be throwing grenades anytime soon it seems.

Heh, I don't intend on this requiring too much time from people.
But so long as we get four people willing to play, we can just have NPCs running about in the missions too.

But everybody is welcome to join, or just watch.
( I recommend joining :P )
And if I don't get enough interest I can leave it to sit for awhile, before coming back to it when interest is up.

This sounds absolutely amazing. I'm in!
I'll come back in a few hours and make up a character sheet (in lecture at the moment)

If I made my character a Russian, would that be a problem in the context of the story? (I also don't speak a lick of russian)
If yes, I can do up another one. I'd use all same stats and loadout etc anyway, I think

There is no problem with you being any nationality.
It is assumed that all characters will be taught english at some point.
And we can do Untranslated talk in english like below:
"<Hey friends, do you also love communism?>" says Bob Dole in Russian.

Feel free to join anyway.
If you can't post on any day either your character can act, and follow the lead of the others.
Or you could choose for them to just hide and not act by default.

I have added the living characters to the second post. So everyone can see the approved characters.
