the last stand (that i can currently remember) was that the ship generation code is "60 lines of code without any logic in it" (or something with the same meaning)

people, calm down.

ship generation is far from being complete :)
The generation algorithm being unfinished doesn't preclude people from commenting from what they think of the current ship looks or what they would like to see in the future. Moreover, the discussion is quite calm right now.

CCP made some nice ships for Eve-Online, but didn't it take them like 3-4 iterations, >10 staff, and a decade to get there?

Besides, I think how good this game's ships will end up looking will depend more on how much Josh worked on code for the tools to make that work than anything.

Some people will certainly dig up or concoct interesting formulatiosn for the procedural generation of ships and try them with ltheory - but it takes fairly extensive software tools to then be able to remove, avoid and manually gloss over all the nonsense and engine performance wrecking ships of great AI confusion that a naive generator might create.

Not to mention any mod ship generation algorithms come after launch, and not packaged with vanilla. And reviews tend to not to include mods in their impression, so Josh really needs good ship and station algorithms. (And I don't doubt that he is capable of producing said algorithms. :) )
You have disobeyed God. Now you must pay the consequence.

:o I can't say that I do, Cha0zz. :)

They aren't very elegant or simple and I'm not sure if they would be allowed in civilized regions of the LT universe. They obviously didn't present the plans for inspection by the local authorities. They would probably be rejected on the grounds of it being a bit of an eyesore.

Sorry, Josh. :P

Edit: I'm sure they would not look like the monstrosities we build at the moment. Did the Elders teach us nothing about design before they moved on to a higher plane.

:P I don't really mean that I miss them like they were back then, I meant that I miss the style, more specific the ring/ torus like parts of them.

Probably because they make me think about what we humans could do ourselves, see Stanford torus, O'Neil Cylinder and Bernal Sphere, the ring like structures speak more to my imagination than the spikes and cylinders we have curently.

I fully agree that they were unpolished back then, but they had potential, In my opinion more potential than the current stations.

:D

How can you find those examples ugly?

"Sir, we have another station on the radar."
"Is it a pretty station?"
"No, sir."

I also added some links to my previous post with how I want stations to look :)
I don't find them ugly, Cha0zz, but the only example you presented initially was that thing that Josh "designed". :P
I know, but I have a bad habit to post something that's not entirely complete and only complete it later by editing

see, now I'm doing it again :P

 Quite right too, that's the only way to deal with such ugly constructions.
 You guys are great. :D

I like specifically that the older stations were asymmetrical. With the new ones, if you've seen one side, you've seen them all, but I like the idea of stations large enough that you could explore them for a while - and know which side of the station you were on simply by how it looked from your perspective. I liked the ones like that in Freelancer.

I agree. :D It would be a lot of fun.
