Return to “Polls”

Assuming they're "done well", do you enjoy earning achievements?

Achievements are awesome, and I'm very disappointed that Josh won't be adding them.

I love trying to earn achievements, and try to earn them in a lot of the games I play.

They can be fun, and sometimes I try to earn them if I like a game, but not always.

It's neat to see them pop up sometimes, but they don't add much gameplay value for me.

I don't really pay them any attention at all. (Alternatively: what? What are achievements?)

Occasionally they bug me if I see them too often, but I mostly don't notice.

They annoy me somewhat, but I deal with it and pretend they don't exist.

I prefer platforms that don't have achievements partly because they get on my nerves.

Steam Achievements

Josh has said they won't be in the game, but I'm curious - how many of you actually enjoy steam achievements? Why or why not?

Personally I fall into the category of not usually paying attention, but sometimes if I like a game I'll go out of my way to earn extra ones - especially ones that are fun, non-grindy challenges. ("Headshot two enemies while in midair" for instance.)

Those ones are fun. I think a lot of achievements are done wrong. If something happens normally in a game regardless of how you play it, it's not really an achievement, is it? It just means "I played the game".

Some achievements say "Win 1000 matches" when most people will only play maybe a hundred matches at most. Those are just grindy. Why do they even exist? The game will stop being fun long before then.

Then there are achievements like "Congrats! You started the game!" ...wat. I guess that could give the developer some idea of what percentage of people actually fire up the game, but I mean, still, come on. That's not an achievement. You haven't really achieved anything. Anyone can start a game.

Better ones get you out of your normal playstyle, teach you to try new things, or reward you for doing something awesome. Or, as you stated, reward lots of skill. But many, many games just do achievements wrong. (Even my beloved Age of Empires II.)

Steam achievements really don't drive me to play the game. It is kind of neat when you do something that the developer thought was cool, and could possibly be best used in teaching and encouraging the use of specific game mechanics.

If LT were to have Steam achievements I'd expect them to be something like these:

Tradesmen: Create a project
Overlord: Kill 10 NPCs in RTS view
Production Specialist: Create a product (ammo, weapon system, ship component)
Explorer: Discover a new wormhole
Constructor: Create a ship or station

The nice thing about these is that they show that the player has uncovered portions of the game and has begun to grasp each new concept.

The NT "Rational" Explorer type: not all that motivated by Achievements. ;)

I don't oppose them because some people are more motivated by extrinsic rewards than others.

But Limit Theory has never struck me as being that kind of game, or appealing strongly to the Achiever gamers. Interesting to see a little data supporting that theory.

I've never felt the irresistible urge to 100% a game. Achievements give me a good idea about where I am compared to other people who own the game, how far the average person gets, and occasionally they give a hint at a fun activity or challenge. I like the statistical information they provide when they are available, like how many people have actually bothered beating the tutorial, or finished the game on Hard.

This pretty much my only use for achievements.

I'm not averse to "Hey, I want to see if I can do that!" That's a way in which achievements can support exploratory and narrativist gameplay interests.

But you could get that through some mechanism other than achievements....

You mean like, the steam achievement you get for playing the first main story quest? It's really interesting, 83% of the players finish the first main quest, but only 70% finish the second (well, technically the third one, but the second one is so small). And only 61% complete the 5th main quest where you first meet the greybeards.
So yeah, the achievements can be really interesting to see how much the players interacted with the game and the world within.

Ah, and of the 83% who get out of Helgen, only 73% activates the guardian stones that you come by when you just follow the street from Helgen to Riverwood. So, yeah.

To be entirely fair, I often miss these myself. :ghost:

I did, too. Out of Helgen I first spent some time letting a wispmother smack me around some, then I followed the path northeast to Riverwood.

I mooched around there for a while, crossed the river north to go get the gold dragon's claw, then finally headed west along the river and found the three Guardian stones.

And then it was on east and north to Whiterun and the main quest.

Which I promptly ignored. :D

Yeah, it's not just that. There are some basic achievements like only 72% of the people who played the game reached character level 5. And only 64% reached level 10. Only half of all players ever bought a house, only 41% completed the achievement "Artificer" (Make a smithed item, an enchanted item, and a potion), only 28% completed "Sideways" (complete 5 sidequests) and only 22% of the players completed the "Hard Worker" achievement, that you get for chopping some wood, cooking some food and gathering some ore.

So yeah, even if most players totally ignore the main quest and just wander off and do all sorts of things, they seemingly don't even do sidequests. Or at least approximately two-thirds of the players don't.

(Damn, I love statistics. :D)

I live when they are tied to lasting moments. Like, when you first consume a dragon soul in Skyrim, and you get this cool achievement. That was an achievement done right. :D
