Linux and OpenGL version

Hello

Josh, what version of the OpenGL API are you using for LT?

The reason I ask is because I use Linux (a lot). Mesa, the open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification, currently implements the OpenGL 3.1 API. While the driver for Intel Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is the only driver to support OpenGL 3.1.

I understand that Linux is not a priority right now, but as a Linux nerd I have to ask :ugeek:

The last I heard Josh was downgrading from requiring 3.3, and the only large difference between 3.2 and 3.1 is geometry shading. With that in mind it depends mostly on if Josh uses geometry shaders, and even if he does you may be fine with 3.1 anyway as long as your driver supports the GL_ARB_geometry_shader extension.
There's a few ways to check if you do; in linux you can most easily use glxinfo, it comes with some versions of mesa. If you try glxinfo in a console and it's not found you'll need to get the mesa-demos package from your repository.

Shaders don't exist for the OpenGL 1.5 core specification. Chances are you're thinking of the GLSL version he's using which is quite a different thing. The lowest GLSL version you'd be likely to use is 1.3 which targets opengl 3.x

The requirement is GL 3.2, although it can probably run on any GL 3+ implementations. The only feature I use from 3.2 is seamless cubemap filtering. Without it, the game will still run but the shading will not be as nice. So I imagine anything with GL 3 will be fine.

GLSL version has, as Katawa said, been downgraded to 1.5

I found a patch for seamless cubemap filtering. However, I need to do some research if it is released in to the wild.

*Me crying*, according to mesa GLSL version 1.4 is only supported: http://www.mesa3d.org/shading.html. However, the ATI and Nvidia proprietary drivers probably support all of the above. However, It would be cool to get mesa and intel driver support like Valve has done for the Source engine. Hopefully the mesa stack will evolve fast and be on OpenGL 3.3 and GLSL version 1.5 before LT release.

Well, I don't think it's going to run on Mesa anyway...I can't imagine that LT is going to run without hardware acceleration.

Isn't it possible to get hardware accelerated drivers for your particular card on linux?

I have a 2 year old radeon card so I will probably be able to play it with AMD proprietary drivers.

Mesa is an open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification and they are also maintaining several hardware and software drivers. So there are also Open source drivers for Nvidia, AMD and Intel cards. The Nvidia and AMD cards are maintained by enthusiasts but the Intel card open source drivet is maintained by Intel.

The Linux graphic arena is very messy :wtf:

Hmm oh dear..I didn't realize that. I thought Mesa was strictly a software implementation. I do hope Linux doesn't prove to be too much of a pain in the rear.

If you want I can do some research for you in the area of OpenGL, graphics and Linux. I am doing a happy hacking thingy (C++) in that area and could share my findings.

Great!

And certainly, I would be very appreciative if you just let us know if you learn anything important in those regards. I will be doing the necessary research / heavy lifting when the time comes for the port, but any tips are welcome :D

Historically speaking ati has done a better job on linux driver support than nvidia, so you're ahead in that department. Out of curiosity what flavor of linux do you use?

Mostly Debian on servers and Ubuntu on Desktops. But I have tried alot of them :ugeek:
