S46's mega suggestion thread (will edit whenever something new pops up from out of my brain)

#1
So, the two main suggestions I've done so far are Dynamic Destruction and Faction Shipyards, which can also be found in the suggestions thread. Some of my other ideas are as follows:

Nano-bots or a self repair turret that can be used to heal your ship (and can mean that, even if your engine is destroyed, you could still make a comeback, fix your engine and either get out of there or fight back).

Self-replicating drones/ships - they find an asteroid that has a resource they need, mine it, and can then construct a copy of themselves, which will then find another resource and copy itself again, and they will copy themselves, and so on.

Mobile shipyard - not sure if this would be possible, perhaps. A mobile shipyard that can warp to other systems to find new resources to make its ships.

Carriers - will huge ships be able to carry your ship, and multiple other ships, in it as a transport? Or is that not planned for LT 1.0?

Drone Hangars - if drones follow you everywhere, that would look a little like a bunch of fish after feed, so how about your ship being able to store drones inside hangars?

Weapon groups - large ships have large amounts of weapons, so to prevent having to switch them on and assign them a target one by one, assign them groups (maybe with keybinds) that will make it easier to manage massive arrays of different types of weapons, but won't make ALL your turrets just able to shoot at one ship at a time (cause you can assign different ships to different groups).

News - maybe there could be news boards at stations, saying things like "This faction have signed a treaty with that faction" or "This faction have declared war on that faction". This could make for opportunities for you to buy up certain resources at low prices and sell them to factions engaged in war that will value them at much more, thus earning you a profit. The billboards could also be used as advertisement boards, maybe, that display procedural advertisements for corporations and jobs...

Procedural cities - If we're able to explore planets in LT, then obviously there should be procedural cities on inhabited ones, preferably with some interesting design variants. Also, there should be landing pads and docking areas for ships that land there.

Space Roads - designated "paths" for large convoys to travel between systems or around a system.

EDIT: Giant stations dedicated for mining, megafacilities/factories - if planned for the game, great :}

EDIT: Scrapyards, large/giant stations or facilities designed to hold and ultimately sell off or recycle old ships.

EDIT: A colonization ship - a type/class/whatever of ship that is made to go out and seek uncolonized worlds that are good for habitation. It's an idea. As if the megastations/facilities haven't brought up enough discussion lately

Nanobots haven't been talked about much. I imagine that these would be easy to mod into the base game as it's just another variation of the repair system.

Self Replicating drones/ships have been talked about, and if you do a search for it I'm sure you'll find the relevant threads. If memory servers, it was generally a disliked concept.

Mobile ship yards are certainly possible though I'm unsure if they are planned for LT or not. Manufacturing munitions on large ships is already confirmed.

Carriers are confirmed for being in LT, either at release or at a later point in time.

If a ship has a hanger, why would it need to be specific for drones? I'd say this needs some elaboration.

Weapon groups have been confirmed since day one.

News is a work in progress as of one of the last Road To Beta updates.

Procedural Cities were in the game, but later scrapped for an orbital trade system. This will be able to be modded in.

Space Roads are what we call Warp Nodes or Warp Rails.

Check out the Limit Theory dev videos on youtube when you have some time. There's 23 of them I think, but they are very informative about the vision of LT. Also, if you haven't done so already, feel free to download and do key word searches in the PDF documents in my signature (download past dev logs). They will answer your questions.

Thanks for running through it and answering some of the questions!

Also, Lindsey has now joined the team, and even with my limited technical knowledge I know that that means high quality ships and stations... ...so could procedural cities be a thing again? It's something I would love to see...
It looks like I already answered that question.

As Cornflakes said, they have been planned since the start. Have you not been on the Kickstarter site or Josh's Youtube to watch the videos yet? I suggest writing down all of your questions, then watching the videos and checking off each item as it comes up. Talvieno also posted a feature list which states what to expect in game. If you have read through all of that material and still have comments or questions then feel free to post them here and we'll get answers to you as soon as possible.

Space Roads as you describe it may or may not exist in LT. Obviously convoys will exist and will follow the same path put forth by their escorts. Will they be designated as in ship must travel from A to B or else... probably not.

Giant stations and scrapyards are unconfirmed at the moment. There are a lot of various structures which could exist in LT, unfortunately nothing has been confirmed because the game has never gotten to the point where game play related structures were being worked on. (Other than normal and asteroid stations)

Because warp rails arent a thing?

Where is a giant station /megafacility different from a station thats simply... big?

Stations that are like, MASSIVE. And mostly used for specialized things, such as mining, or mass production/storage of ships.

Also, I'm not saying these HAVE to be in the game. It's just things that I think would make it more alive and less like "there's a NPC ship. There's another one. And another" rather than saying "There's a capital ship being escorted by three dreadnoughts and a series of fighter groups. There's a convoy of large mining ships with cargoholds full of ore traveling along a designated route through systems, from an asteroid field to a huge processing plant" and so on. The suggestions aren't orders that Josh, Adam and Lindsey have to carry out under pain of death

Just suggestions for the suggestion thread...

Warp rails are a thing. Warp rails aren't what S46 was describing though, so if you are going to needle me on that point you should at least read the original statement.

So, you are arguing that all stations should look the same and perform the same function instead of being diverse and specialized? Because S46 never said that there should only be big and huge stations performing the same tasks.

where did i say anything like that?

And im asking where a "megastation" is different from a normal station except it being "big".
A specialised station is specialised because appropriate modules are mounted in it, not because it has some magic status effect that makes it good at X.
Where is a "megastation" factory different from a large factory station?

There is no difference between mega station and large factory station other than mega station being shorter to type and sounding more interesting. You seem to want to limit how he is describing a big station, which is rather rude when it's clear he isn't saying that a bigger station is better.

Big, giant, huge, massive, mega, all describe a large object. In this instance, S46 is using different adjectives to describe the same object and idea to help keep his writing interesting to read. He is not comparing two different sizes of stations.

That is also not what im saying, by far.
Im asking if and how a megastation is conceptually different from a "normal" station thats simply large.
Because 46 acts like there is some non communicated difference

Perhaps a station is to a megastation what a module is to a ship. Megastation sounds like something in the same order of magnitude of size as a planet... Perhaps a cluster of stations combining to a structure 25-200% the volume/mass/relevant stat as a planet? Different segments on the mega station having different owners, and the megastation itself having territories to fight over.

Or perhaps I'm clouding 46s idea with my own thoughts on superstructures so large you could comfortably park a couple death stars at one which would be built out of station sized segments... Station size being 1000-100000m^3
