Side Quest Story lines

#1
Hey people of the forums!
I'm new to these forums and this is my first topic here, but I thought it would be cool to have some people of the community write some of the side quest storylines that might be possible in the game!
Side quests make the environment look more alive, at least in my opinion, and here, it would be cool to have some aliens or something give you a side quest written by someone in the community.
This way, there can be very diverse and a lot of side quests without a lot of work. They'd of course have to read through all the sent stories, and decide if the quality is high enough, but personally, I think this is a small problem.

Give me your opinion on this idea!

It could be cool to crowdsource the creation of mission *types* though. Considering that Josh is only one person, he might get a bit of tunnel vision about that. If he posted a thread and let us go crazy, he could just pick out the ones that are possible in the infrastructure and not have to brainstorm the ideas.

From what i know the AI can outsource anything that it can do by itself through missions.

From knowing joshs work philosophy he'd only need to implement new functionalities into the game with the accompanying AI routines and the AI can make missions out of it automatically.

So there is no need to design mission types, as they are just a way of ordering other NPC's around

I'm pretty sure it can do that now. It might not read like “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.” but there are missions none the less.

Welcome to the forums. :) Personally, I love that everything in LT is procedural. It's awesome that way - "side quests" will come up on their own. Entire campaigns will come up on their own - taking over a neighboring star system, or defending what little you own against the oncoming horde, either as the ruler or the soldier. You make your own story, and it's different every game. Every universe even.

Welcome to the forums Zippie!

I think mission TYPES might still be worth brainstorming. For example, has anyone even mentioned that "Go find me a suitable system where I can set up my base" jobs being given by employers to settle a previously unsettled system?

Stuff like that where we may think it's obvious but it might not be obvious to others.

this will be a mission for "find me a system with parameters xyz" and the AI thinks internally "i need a new base" "i need a system for that" -> outsource "find system" to a mission -> get result and build base

"Find me an unclaimed asteroid zone" "Find me a good outpost to attack" "Find some unescorted freighters" "Find a jump hole into my enemy's system" "Give me an enemy headcount in system X" "Find the enemy's largest ship"

The "Find this for me" mission type could be huge, and give explorer types a valid reason to explore. I like it.

I realize that.

But if Josh didn't code in a job type of "Find this for me" then this mission doesn't exist. It's easy to see HOW these missions can be accomplished and HOW they can be coded, but being able to create the type first is important. I don't think anyone else has yet suggested the "Find this for me" type mission yet, and if I hadn't brought it up here, when (if at all) would it have been added in?

It would be naive to think that Josh has already thought of all mission types that are going to be in the game. Hence, crowd-sourcing. ;)

It might be also easier to get a list of mission types first (similar to the thread on features planned for the game) so that it's easier to put them all in one place. As it stands, I think there are multiple threads on that, and my search-fu is weak to be able to combine them all into one.
