I'm persuaded that, as with most holy wars, it's not the thing itself, but the condescending attitude with which the thing is stated -- as though some invented human belief system is unequivocal Truth, and anyone who disagrees is obviously a benighted fool who deserves mockery.

That kind of 'tude just invites ever-more-heated responses.

There's only two hard things in computing - when to clear the cache, and naming things.

Both lead to religious wars a dozen times more intense than the Crusades.

I've heard it as "there are two hard problems in computer science: cache concurrency, naming things, and off-by-one errors."
