"Allright, let's go save squad A's butt!"

I switch the music to The Rising of the Moon and sing along, changing parts of the lyrics to fit the situation.
I follow the rest of the squad towards I7. If we encounter the military fighter along the way and it has spotted us,
I get into cover and fire my bubble blower towards it, to a weak spot if I can find one.

Otherwise, if there are any hostiles near I7 I fire at one of those.

TURN 4

((This turn felt really messy to me - feel free to ask questions if there's anything I didn't manage to make clear. I'm also trying to start including how much ammo everyone has, to make it easier to tell how much is left. Provided I can keep up with that, of course - but that shouldn't be too hard.))

Boost to F7 full speed, keeping between the ridges, staying low and evading inbound fire.
As soon as I get low and moving, open the canopy, stand up, lock on with my rocket launcher and fire that missile behind me at the nearest enemy. Then get strapped in, close up the canopy, and resume evading all the way to the target space.

When I hear the reinforcement from the Emisis talk:
"Lemons to reinforcement. Nice to meet. Bringing a package to you. Of four hostiles..."
If I fire and hit the enemy:
"...Three hostiles. Beware at another hostile. Somewhere around H8.""
If I fire and miss:
"... Beware at another hostile. Somewhere around H8."
As fast as you can, you accelerate toward F7, wanting to get as far away from the enemy as possible. Your plan is to stay close to the ground, hopefully avoiding the majority of their fire.

This doesn't work. Not at all. Not remotely.

You've barely started moving before they're already on top of you, hammering you with laser fire and plasma blasts. It's quite clear at this point that they care absolutely nothing about the health of any one of their colonists, so long as they manage to eradicate you. Several plasma shots hit your CASKET in the rear - your ship begins pitching upwards, even as you open the canopy. The thin Nanyejian air rushes past you as you stand, screaming against your suit. Another few shots hit elsewhere on the rear of the CASKET; as you look back into the cloud of dark gray smoke you're trailing behind, you see bits of debris fly off, clattering onto the rooftops a few dozen feet below. A laser streaks past, carving a dark mark across your hull and wreaking havoc with the starboard robotic arm. That's fine, though - you never liked robotics anyway. As plasma shots and laser strikes continue to pour in, you begin to lock on with your rocket launcher, waiting for the chime that means you've succeeded. One of your engines explodes with a sharp pop, spraying shrapnel out the back - another few plasma shots crash to the buildings below... but you've almost finished locking on.

You hear someone talk on the comms. It's not a voice you recognize. Must be the new guy, you figure.

"Lemons to reinforcement," you say, "Nice to meet. Bringing a package to you. Four hostiles..."

Your rocket launcher beeps urgently. Without a moment's hesitation, you fire; the missile streaks off, and you watch it for a moment, waiting for it to curve upwards toward the enemy ships, which are hardly specks in the distance at this point... but it never does. Confused, you look at the little display panel on the side. It states, very clearly: [LOCK-ON FAILED: OUT OF RANGE] Your heart sinks in your chest, and you finish the communication: "... Beware of another hostile. Somewhere around H8."

Feeling dejected, you plop back down into your seat, strapping back in and closing the canopy. You just wasted a rocket, and for nothing. You didn't even get to see it land, and the enemies didn't even bother to follow you. You correct your course with what engines you have left and continue toward the grid square F7 on the map.

  • 3 infantry rockets left: lock-on, anti-armor, heatseeker

((You are lucky to be alive. Your ship is in worse shape than anyone else's. With two engines down, multiple other problems and assorted structural damage to boot, you're barely flying. But you fired a rocket, so you have that going for you, which is nice.))

"Lemons, I'll be firing on the fighter on the far right of I5 to increase the chance of you escaping. Don't screw this up!
Miles, if you could fly in a bit closer add to my attack before fleeing, I would be grateful."

Fire off another round into the far-right squid of i7, and retreat to the middle of k7.
If I see the heavy fighter, do my best to keep at least 2 kilometers between us (the heavy and I) at all times.
When I reach K7, turn around so I'm facing the way I came.
Taking careful aim, you fire a second railgun round at the nearest fighter that shows some signs of structural damage - and it's a very lucky hit. As the slug rips through the enemy's core, the whole thing explodes in a short-lived fireball, the pieces tumbling down to the city below. One of the largest chunks even rips a hole in the roof of a building. All of this seems to get the attention of the other three remaining craft, and they circle back around to give chase - but you're already headed out, retreating to the middle of K7 past the southern ridge.

It isn't long before you've arrived safely at your destination, along with Miles and Buck, neither of whom look any worse for wear (well, any more than they already are). Your new squadmate, Vynkor, soon shows up as well, pulling into a close formation with the rest of you. The heavy fighter is nowhere to be seen, which is surprising - Vynkor should have passed it on her way here. Maybe Beta came through after all?

Temporarily turn off my radio and start angrily hitting my computer screens and shouting: "God fuckin' damn it! Of all the places that bullet could've hit me, it hits the worst goddamn possible place! I swear I'll kill all them goddamn aliens with my bare hands, personally!"
Turn the radio back on, to my squad: "Yep, fellas, I'm havin' some real bad uh, technical difficulties here. I'll be out o' commission until someone good with a wrench can patch me up. I can't even use this field manipulator anymore, since that squid destroyed my computer."

Continue retreating southward towards K7
Be very cautious when doing so, keep a constant eye out for threats, especially the heavy fighter. Try to locate it with my hacking computer (if at all possible)
Let someone else cross the ridge before me, cross only after I make sure I'd be safe (either the heavy fighter isn't nearby or it is engaging someone else in my squad already)
if the heavy fighter is engaging someone in our squad at any point in time, or I detect where it is in general
-Try and stay as far away and as far out of sight as possible, while also avoiding any other potential threats
while flying, try and stay as close to the ground as I fell comfortable (i.e. until it starts applying a man. roll) in order to at least have a shot at surviving if my CASKET crashes into the ground

((Alright, this is really bad. We're effectively down to two combatants - Brom and Miles. Lemons doesn't really have any proper ship weapons, and my computer is disabled, making me practically useless aside from hacking. Honestly, I'm not even sure if we can get Lemons out of this predicament, I give him very slim chances of surviving the turn. If I run into the heavy fighter, count me as dead as well. We really need to get to squad Beta or team up with the new person someplace safe so that at least I can patch up and be somewhat combat-ready again. There's no way that just the two of you will be able to storm that colony.))
"Yep, fellas," you say, continuing to retreat, "I'm havin' some real bad, uh, technical difficulties here. I'll be out o' commission until someoene with a good wrench can patch me up. I can't even use this field manipulator anymore, since that squid destroyed my computer.

You continue retreating, staying close to the ground and keeping a cautious eye on the dusty, pink-orange Nanyej skies for any sort of enemies about. While the four (now three, thanks to Brom's marksmanship) fighters continue to follow you, they're the only ones you see.

Fortunately, the entire journey passes without incident. You arrive at K7, and the others soon form up on your position. Even Vynkor shows up - your new squadmate, fresh out of cryo. Hopefully she has some skill with fixing ships. You could really use that at this point.

Move closer to Brom

When Brom fires,
Fire at the far right enemy, same that Brom is firing at.

Follow Brom to k7.
Gunning your engines, you fly over closer to Brom, who is already two kilometers away. By the time you get there, he's already shot an enemy ship and is turning to leave... and there's no point in firing, because it's already dead. Brom seems to be particularly good at this.

You turn and follow Brom to K7, where you meet up with the others in your squad (sans Lemons). Fresh blood also shows up: Vynkor, just out of cryo. It's a girl. You like girls. You're kind of more interested in Anelle at the moment, but who knows? Things can change...

I follow the path depicted below.
Spoiler:      SHOW
Image
Along the path, I observe the following:
-I fly low and fast to avoid being spotted. As low as I can without incurring maneuverability rolls.
-I try to get a glimpse of the wrecks of Miranda's CASKET and the alien fighter.
Just to see how big the pieces are for potential salvage later.
-Once within comms range, I announce my presence and railgun over comms.
-If I see an enemy:
–If the enemy appears to be a high-tier fighter akin to the ones assaulting the Nemesis, I try to avoid engagement and stay out of sight.
—If I'm sighted, I hightail it to Beta via the most direct path, using terrain to provide as much meager cover as it can manage. If this means flying lower and incurring maneuverability rolls, I fly no lower than would give me a -1 modifier.((That's a net of 0, not a net of -1.)) I also notify Beta that I'm bringing them a target which will require focus fire.
–If the enemy appears to be a very low-tier or damaged (i.e. target of opportunity), I line up a shot with the railgun and fire it.
–If the enemy appears to be medium-grade and undamaged, I try to avoid engagement and stay out of sight.
—If I'm sighted, I fire on it with the railgun.

If I arrive at the end of the path (instead of running to Beta), I creep up the last ridge, keeping a low profile to the enemy fighters.
-If I have not yet fired:
–Noting the others' called shots, I target the enemy which seems most likely to be disabled by my shot. That is: Don't shoot at a ship which is already going down; otherwise target the weakest craft.

If I've fled to Beta, I get within their weapons range and try to put a ridge or particularly large rock between me and the fighter. I then fire upon the fighter (around the rock, obviously) and hope that the others do the same.

Overall, I should fire exactly once.

((Is that enough conditionals? :ghost:))
You begin to fly north-east, hugging the canyon wall. Over on your left, a battle rages: Kendall's squad gradually pushes back the hiltorel fighters toward the northwestern ridge. Their ability is incredible, and their weapons far beyond anything you currently have access to; it's actually pretty fascinating to watch - or it would be, if you weren't so likely to get caught in the crossfire. As you leave, you take a good look around - your eyes are able to pick out the wrecks of Miranda's CASKET and the alien fighter. They're difficult to make out - mostly because they're covered in dust, and in shadow - but it seems pretty clear to you that there's essentially nothing left - especially of Miranda's CASKET. Nobody could've survived that.

The comms crackle. "Hey, you headed east? You're 'Vynkor', right?" It's a human voice. You assume it's one of Kendall's squad.

You press the comm button. "Yep," you say shortly.

"Oh... you're a girl?? .." The peson says it like it makes all the difference in the world. "I mean, that's cool! I, uh... I like girls. Um... Anyway, FTO said I'm supposed to be escorting you up north - something about another fighter up there. You doing all right?"

"Yep." What else are you supposed to say?

"Heh, all right... You don't seem to talk much..." You almost retort with "No shit," but bite your tounge. "Anyway, I'm Meseilke. Nice to meet you! We'll get along great." Another CASKET - this one much prettier than yours - forms up on your position, and together, you head north-east.

~~~
As you fly through the canyons, Meseilke tries to give you various pointers and tips - things to keep you alive. Somehow your dead silence hasn't yet made it obvious you're not interested in conversation.
"And always use cover if you're on the ground," Meseilke goes on. "That'll save your ass. Better to use full cover if you can - stay hidden! And always keep moving. Sitting still gets you killed fast, too. Um... let's see, what else - Oh, and if you can, try to flank the enemy, getting around their cover makes them a lot easier to hit. And shotguns! I LOVE shotguns. You ought to get one of those, they're great. Oh, and always keep an eye out for surprises - enemies like to surprise you. Sneaky bastards. Or some of them are anyway, some of them are really stupid. And... um... hey, do you see that?"
You look forwards - there, about four kilometers away, little flecks flit about in the distance. You see tiny balls of light flashing about. You're guessing it's combat.
"Oh, not good... that must be the fighter Reyha mentioned. Okay, we'll split off. You head down and under, I'll fly ahead and see if I can whack this one good. If we ever get shore leave, maybe I can get you a drink or something?" One thing has been made abundantly clear: Meseilke is not very good at flirting. Ignoring it entirely, you duck down low, flying as close to the ground as you can manage without hitting anything, and your companion streaks ahead with a flare of afterburners. You continue on toward your destination: meeting up with the rest of Alpha.
Someone else speaks up over the comms. "Lemons to reinforcement. Nice to meet. Bringing a package to you. Of four hostiles... beware of another hostile, somewhere around H8." You don't respond. Meseilke is already dealing with one, and you don't see any others nearby.
~~~

It isn't much longer before you've arrived at the same location as Squad Alpha. Without mincing words... they're a disaster. One of them - Lemons, apparently - is missing entirely, and most of the other three seem pretty beat up. With four hostiles still incoming, that doesn't sound good at all.

Squad Beta:

As Beta forms back up on a central position, Bob takes the opportunity to radio the hiltorel scavengers. "I'm sorry, Messrs. We on't want the N A C E L L E that is with you. We no want to hurt you no more. I will proof we no want to hurt you by backing off. Please Messrs. tentacles, you take this as proof we no want to hurt you and you allow us to recover our N A C E L L E. OH, and Jimmy says 'hi'."

"Not our problem, hoss," the guy says in response. "We're headed out of atmo with Vesuvius. I'd suggest you head out too, you're gonna be in a nasty scrape if Huhoba comes callin'. I'll likely be bunked up near the Portside Tanker for a few weeks up on Fuhodo Station, so drop me a line if you get out and want to do business." The comms fall silent. It seems very strange that they're being so friendly - almost suspicious.

Meanwhile, Beta has fully formed up together, and as a group they head north, over the line of peaks making up the nearby ridge. A short time after they crest the peaks, however, they see a lone hiltorel fighter far off in the distance - a fighter that spots them almost immediately and turns sharply in their direction.

If one of the scavengers tries to follow shoot at it with my turreted particle gun.
When I arrive at I7:

- shoot at any enemy that comes in range with my mounted laser
Whenever I hit an enemy: hum Humpty Dumpty over the comms
If we encounter a fighter while flying to I7:
Get into cover and fire at it with my weapons (max 1 shot/ weapon)
As soon as you see the hiltorel fighter rushing towards you, you do a complete 180-degree turn and duck your CASKET behind some of the nearby peaks. This probably saves your life: moments after you get in place, an array of green fireballs crash against the mountainside just behind you, blasting holes and causing some of them to crumble. A few seconds later, you see another volley rip Saoirse's ship wide open behind the cockpit, knocking her downwards from the force of the blast. Turning, you get back out of cover and fire a wild shot with your particle gun that, predictably, misses. You follow it up with your laser, but this also misses - and Caleb seems to be hit now, too. Things are beginning to look grim.

"Hey!" a new voice radios over the comms; you see a blue streak rocketing toward the hiltorel ship from the west - a REKT CASKET. "Meseilke here! It'd be a shame to lose you guys so early on; you gotta be more careful than that!" As the person speaks, the sky lights up with a bright volley of little green flashing rounds that streak past the hiltorel fighter, forcing it to break off its attack on your squad. You watch intently as their little battle commences. Meseilke appears to be phenomenal at dodging incoming fire, whipping the CASKET back and forth, soaring like a leaf on the wind. A swarm of rockets sprays outwards, homing in on the enemy craft and pounding it with a series of explosions; the enemy fighter begins to drop from the sky, smoke trailing from behind. Before the ship's pilot has a chance to recover, Meseilke swoops in and nails it with a massive particle beam that rips it apart explosively.

The inert pieces tumble from the sky.

"Thanks for the assist!" Meseilke calls. "I'll head back now, Reyha has new orders for me. Stay safe out there, people. Don't do anything stupid, and I'll catch you again sometime." Meseilke's craft turns and heads back to the south-west with a sudden burst of speed, leaving you alone with your wounded allies.

"Guys, hostile fighter incoming!" you warn, doing a complete 180-degree turn and duck your CASKET behind some of the nearby peaks. Half of the rest of your squad follows suit, barely evading the laser and plasma fire that crashes into the nearby rocks. This guy is clearly a lot better equipped than the ships you were fighting only moments ago.

Saoirse shouts - she's been hit. Another volley streaks towards the rest of your allies - the fighter's assault is harsh and chaotic. Out of desperation, you gun your engines and flit out of cover, hurriedly doing the calculations for your Microwave Field Manipulator mid-spin as you try to get a solid fix on the fighter's position. As soon as you hit the button to fire, though, you know you've completely missed. Off to your right, Caleb shouts in horror as a wide laser beam streaks across the side of his craft, ripping up several of his thrusters with a series of explosions; debris from his ship sprays out. Part of you wants to go over and help him, but you know it'd do no good, and instead concentrate your efforts on hacking the enemy craft. You have to succeed.

As the person speaks, the sky lights up with a bright volley of little green flashing rounds that streak past the hiltorel fighter, forcing it to break off its attack on your squad. You're tempted to watch their battle, but no - you continue your hack. Redline, Q-trans, TriShell - you have a great deal of software at your fingertips, and you know the ins and outs of every single one of them. You're in the zone. One by one, the hiltorel's outmoded, dated firewalls fall to your attacks, circumventing one safeguard after another. The antivirus programs have homed in on your decoys, just as planned; you head right for the engines and cut their power.

The enemy fighter begins to drop from the sky, smoke trailing from behind. Before the pilot has a chance to recover, Meseilke swoops in and nails it with a massive particle beam that rips it apart explosively.

All along that pointed ridgetop, those new CASKET men were seen
High above with shining weapons, flown toward lonesome enemies
Death to every foe and traitor, whistle out the marching tune
And hoorah me boys for freedom, get us off this wretched moon!

As you sing, you duck into cover to avoid the first volley of fire, which crashes against the ridge behind you, narrowly missing Bob. You pop back out of cover to fire a barrage of bubbles from your bubble blower - their iridescent shapes begin to float out toward the enemy fighter - but instants later, a volley of return fire crashes into the back of your ship with a roar that tosses you downwards from the explosive force. The whiplash knocks your head against the back of your seat, and your teeth chatter as you hurriedly try to regain control, anxious about whether or not they got your bubble blower - but according to the computer readouts, your bubble blower still has eight shots left, so you're fine - or should be. You get back into cover and continue guiding the bubbles toward the squid-ship, which is focusing on Caleb now, ripping the port side of his ship to pieces because he's an easy target: he never got into cover. At that point you happen to look up and notice that a long, jagged crack runs partway down the right side of your canopy; it hisses quietly.

I form up with the squad and head towards I7 with them. If we encounter an enemy I attempt to fire once with my laser and evade incoming fire.
"Hostile fighter incoming!" Frank calls out over the comms; you look and see a single hiltorel craft turning around in your direction. It looks like an easy target; you figure that together, your squad should be able to take it down, and fire a laser shot at it straightaway, managing to clip the edge of its winglets. It doesn't seem to do much damage, unfortunately; it was only a graze.

What wasn't a graze: The volley of shots that crash into the mountainside behind you, narrowly missing Bob, followed by another barrage that deals some serious damage to the rear of Saoirse's ship, even cracking the canopy. You're not in the clear either. You try to move to evade, but you're not in time: a heavy laser rips into the port side of your ship, tearing apart several of the thrusters behind you before you can get away. You notice that your ship is considerably more difficult to handle; the turning is becoming sluggish. Worse still, something in the engines behind you is emitting a clanking noise, steadily increasing in volume. You're already in pretty bad shape.

Worst of all, the fighter is clearly about to focus another volley on you. You brace yourself, knowing that if it fires, you won't have any chance of dodging. This isn't the end so soon, is it? ((It would have been, had I not sent an escort with Vynkor as a result of the request one of the other players made previously.))

But it's not the end. The sky lights up with a bright volley of little green, flashing rounds that streak past the hiltorel fighter, forcing it to break off its attack."Hey!" a new voice radios over the comms. form up with saoirse and follow her
if enemy comes in range
coordinate with Saoirse on the target
-hack their maneuvering thrusters
-fire forceps laser at enemy
-do da psi evasive maneuver
As you, following Saoirse, come upon the enemy, you coordinate with Saoirse and initiate a hack to corrupt the enemy's maneuvering thrusters. Shortly after you really get going, a new ship appears from your left - another CASKET, by the looks of it, but much more advanced than yours.

"Hey!" a new voice radios over the comms. "Meseilke here! It'd be a shame to lose you guys so early on; you gotta be more careful than that!" As the person speaks, the sky lights up with a bright volley of little green flashing rounds that streak past the hiltorel fighter, forcing it to break off its attack. You finish your maneuvering thruster hack just in time, and the last of Meseilke's green plasma rounds actually manage to hit, throwing flecks of metal into the thin Nanyejian air. As their battle commences, you take aim with your forceps laser and fire - and, against all odds, actually land your shot, surprising even yourself - but the damage is soon dwarfed by that of Meseilke, who assaults it with a swarm of rockets. After a series of explosions, the enemy fighter begins to drop from the sky, smoke trailing from behind. Before the ship's pilot has a chance to recover, Meseilke swoops in and nails it with a massive particle beam that rips it apart explosively.

The inert pieces tumble to the ground below.

A familiar voice comes on comms. "Hey guys!" Who else is it but your FTO? "I sent you someone new! Her name is Vynkor. Oh, and I talked to Reyha, and she actually sent one of the fighters out to help you! She said they couldn't help long, but it should've been long enough to do some kind of good! I think one of you - Lemons, I think? - is in range of the Nemesis now, so if you guys need anything, this would probably be a good time to ask... you know, before we get cut off again? ...Why is Lemons so far away from everyone else, anyway?"

"Lemons charged into the colony by himself in an attempt to distract a small group of enemy fighters so we could escape.
While not the smartest thing he could have done, it did work for a while. His skills as a decoy are rather impressive. His dodging skills on the other hand... Not so much.
His CASKET is heavily damaged right now."

((To Vynkor.))
"You must be our new squad member, welcome. The name's Brom. I'm the leader of Alpha squad.
What do you call yourself? And what areas do you specialize in? I need to know my team for us to have any chance of success."

"Name's Vynkor. Combat engineer. Railgun and repair pack on the ship. Lasgun, assault rifle, and first aid on foot." I look at the ships. "Where are the hostiles?" Considering that nobody's shooting and our position, they're probably to the north. I head for a convenient object which can shield me from the northwest and point northwest once behind it. I then rise slightly to give my gun a clear line of sight to the top of the ridge.

((Edited to take Brom's words into account.))

"Splendid! We needed a replacement engineer. Our last one ah... Quit the REKT program and took up a job as an artist. She painted a mural near the ship not too long ago. Things are a bit rough here right now thanks in part to her absence, so there's going to be a lot for you to do.
As for the enemy, there should be three of them approaching from the north-west. I would advise you to prepare for battle. We'll make them rue the day they were born."

"Hey bob, We've got an engineer now in case anyone in beta is in need of repairs. I have a feeling she'll be quite popular with both of our squads."

"Thanks for the help, lad! We really appreciate it, give Reyha our regards!"

*To the people of Alpha and Beta*

"We should probably meet up for a moment to do some urgent repairs! We have a number of engineers around, and even 2 repair kits. After that we should probably go over the composition of the teams again..."
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

"Thank you Meseilke-Boss"
"Hey bob, We've got an engineer now in case anyone in beta is in need of repairs. I have a feeling she'll be quite popular with both of our squads."
"Bob's squad already has engineer, Gearhead best engineer anyway"
"We should probably meet up for a moment to do some urgent repairs! We have a number of engineers around, and even 2 repair kits. After that we should probably go over the composition of the teams again..."
"Bob-boss was just about to say that."
"Bob-boss proposes K-8, for regroup and repairs, Jimmy says it is a good defendable position"
"We're headed out of atmo with Vesuvius. I'd suggest you head out too, you're gonna be in a nasty scrape if Huhoba comes callin'. I'll likely be bunked up near the Portside Tanker for a few weeks up on Fuhodo Station, so drop me a line if you get out and want to do business."
"Ok, bye bye"
