TURN 20
MISSION DEBRIEF
Platoon 56, trying desperately to get to the extraction zone before it's too late, rally themselves together for one final stand against Mimir Corporation's furious onslaught. While the reinforcements may have arrived too late to protect the science vessel's precious cargo, they didn't arrive too late to wipe out the Tartarus resistance. As the dreadnoughts and carriers drop out of warp, they launch wave upon wave of HAMMER-class mercenary fighters that rapidly begin to close in on the fleeing inmates.

Of the inmates, only a select few are already within the extraction zone - the EZ - Ysavva, Andrew, and Zorathex, who is carrying the objective beneath his damaged CASKET. Not all are so close, though - Dr. Cha0zz makes up the tail end of the retreat alongside Unit 4965 and Tonon. Dr. Cha0zz starts up some of his favorite music - Don't Fear The Reapers - which he's saved for an occasion such as this. He's not sure whether he'll die, but if he does, he wants to make sure he goes out in style; he's expecting to die, but hoping for the best. Many try to be as composed, but not all succeed. Blake looks behind him, sees the wall of incoming HAMMERs, and starts to scream nonsense over the comms. "I'M A HAPPY KITTEN IN A BASKET, I'M A HAPPY KITTEN IN A BASKET," he begins to chant; his squadmates shout at him to be quiet. If he'd looked behind only a moment later, he would've seen Squidhead erect a large bubble around a group of the HAMMERs, encapsulating them and keeping them from escaping, leaving only six fighters in the first wave. As those six close in on the fleeing REKT troops, they begin to launch their missiles at the nearest ships. Unit 4965 is able to dodge their missiles - just barely - while Dr. Cha0zz activates his magnetic field manipulator around himself - a risky move that sends him spinning forwards and almost rips his ship apart from the stress, but his ship's AI, Jimmy, is able to keep it under control. He surfs forward towards the EZ, just barely ahead of the oncoming missiles, as Jimmy protects him as he can with his microwave field manipulator.

Amidst all this, Tonon doesn't really seem to care. He's too busy trying to woo Chari, and failing miserably at it. She seems disgusted by his advances: "Bone zone?! Really??" she retorts in utter disbelief, and states that she'll probably never see him again after the mission is over. Tonon begins to protest and reason with her, but is cut short when a missile strikes the front of Dinosawer's CASKET, which he's riding in, ripping the hull wide open. He ignores this and continues to beg Chari for a chance, but she says nothing. It soon comes to light that the CASKET's comm systems have been damaged by the missiles - but too late, as another barrage lights up Dino's ship and decimates the robotic arm and scythe.

Meanwhile, Foreigner in the Shieldmaiden and the others rally around Zorathex, protecting him and the objective with their lives. Squidhead puts up the shieldmaiden's personal shield around everyone that's close enough, and the battle begins in earnest. Squidhead and the others begin firing their weapons into the ranks of the oncoming fighters, and the enemy does the same. The maiden's shields ripple from the impact of half a dozen missiles, dimming - BFett starts to make a hack, managing to shut down another fighter, and Blake tries to as well. Andrew and the other conventional weapons users fire a return barrage, damaging more of the incoming HAMMERs - one of them spirals out of control and tumbles into the distance with a trail of smoke. Ysavva excels here - as the second wave begins to stream in, more than one of them breaks off from the main group to seek repairs due to her defense.

Suddenly, the shieldmaiden's shields disappear in an instant, as a railcannon round from one of Mimir's destroyers slams against it, nudging the entire maiden backwards from the force. Squidhead, inside, gets knocked to the floor, and Foreigner holds tight to the controls. A railcannon round smashes through the engine room with a flash of sparks. Squidhead, tentacles damaged, struggles to pull himself back to the controls and only barely manages to restore power before another rail round crashes through the ship's bow, nearly incapacitating Foreigner - and then another through the engines that knocks Squidhead, tumbling, from his seat as the Maiden's power fails.

Meanwhile, all around them, the battle continues. Andrew puts his life on the line in order to save Clara's life, throwing himself at a HAMMER with electrolaser blazing, and only just managing to stop it in time. Francis, too far away for his allies protection, comes under heavy fire - his ship begins to get torn away around him. In tenacious desperation, clinging to hope, he tries to take a nap. His canopy gets blown away, ripping holes into his suit; a missile crashes into his engines and shreds the afterburner system he worked so, so hard save up for. He's not the only one under fire - BFett takes a couple missiles while distracted with a hack, and Hema does as well, cursing about how terrible his microwave field manipulator is - but they survive.

As the HAMMERs continue to stream in, pouring violent death upon their huddled victims, the surviving REKT crew huddle around Zorathex's CASKET and the strange alien ship they're risking their lives for. All hope seems lost, but the tide turns as dozens of Tartarus ships warp in to the far left, barely visible through the fog - huge cutting beams and streaks of plasma dot the skies far ahead as Tartarus's crews begin attacking the Mimir capital ships. While the battle may be on its way towards being won, the Mimir missiles continue to stream in, as the HAMMERs seem intent on destroying any REKT crew they can. Fawkes takes a few hits to his ship, and his ship falls silent, his engines little more than scrap. BFett takes another that knocks his engines out of commission, leaving him stranded and unable to escape. Fallen, lacking any sort of powered weaponry, flies his ship into the path of a missile in order to save Fawkes' life - the explosion rips his ship to pieces, and Fallen's comms fall silent amidst the horrified screams of Kalla. Not too far off, out in the open, Blake falls victim to a hail of bullets from a Mimir chaincannon - he screams in agony that his suit is punctured and he's losing oxygen.

And then, suddenly, the sky changes as the warpships arrive. Six enormous, needle-like ships with a length of over half a kilometer each, they project a warp net around the EZ, encapsulating everyone and picking them up. The warpships' massive guns quickly quells all remaining Mimir resistance as it carries Platoon 56 safely away from the battle. The dust cloud begins to stream past rapidly, as the warpships' massive guns quickly quell any remaining Mimir resistance, and together they leave the Sedirmar battle far behind. Other ships already in the field - a Tartarus hospital ship and a repair carrier - begin to send out crews to collect the survivors of Platoon 56.

SCAMPS comes on the comms. "Well done," he says in limited congratulations. "Tartarus decided to send in a small fleet to intercept the Mimir reinforcements and settle a score. I didn't tell you ahead of time for a reason. If I have, most of you are stupid enough that you probably wouldn't have made it to the extraction point in time, and the mission might have been lost. You did well, 56. We'll get you assholes to the hospital ships to patch you up on the way back to Tartarus, and we'll get your CASKETs repaired. You'll be back home soon enough, and you'll have plenty of time to rest up before we send you on another mission. SCAMPS out."

Looking around at the state of your allies, it hardly feels like a victory to you. Your platoonmates are bruised; battered - their ships damaged or destroyed. Right now, the promise of rest sounds almost more enticing than the promise of extra creds... but that doesn't mean you're not interested.

It isn't long before you're back on the Tartarus. Some of you wake up in the Tartarus Infirmary, while the luckiest among you simply stroll out of the Hangar.
