Freespace, perhaps, but I-War wasn't actually notable enough to make the cut, methinks.
Also, you're only allowed 20 items in a poll, which likely contributes.
Excellent polls, though, Flat!
It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

There were several games I included in my original/full list that I cut very reluctantly to get to 40:
- Dungeons of Daggorath
- Empire
- Star Wars: Dark Forces
- Age of Empires
- Homeworld
Definitely worth including in any additional lists.

I've played Sim City 3000 and both Star Wars: Dark Forces and Star Wars: Dark Forces II. I never really got into Star Wars: Dark Forces because the controls were wonky and couldn't be rebound. It was something like mouse forward to move forward IIRC.

I don't remember any control issues in SW:DF... Maybe the awesomeness outweighed everything else

The two Ultima Underworlds and the first System Shock used the mouse for movement, but I don't recall that in Dark Forces.
Dark Forces did, however, prevent you from saving during levels, a defect corrected (mostly) in the superb sequel. It wasn't too bad except for that darn ice world -- it was just way too easy to slide off the edge and have to restart.

First "space" game I have played was Jet-Pack,
where you had to assemble and refill your rocket, while fighting off mean aliens.
