Capital point defense would tear said torpedoes to pieces long before they impacted. Don't waste your hardpoints trying to turn a destroyer into an oversized PT boat.
Huh. I guess that's true. Guess I'll turn my flagship into more of an antiswarm ship. I'll leave capital destroying to agile bombers and armored battlecruiser bodyguards, then. Sounds good?

In EVE Online, torpedoes are very effective vs. capitals.

Welp, my plan is to start with mining, work my way up to manufacturing, and leverage my wealth to put together a good mercenary/security fleet.

I'd roll with a massive fabricator ship, and my flagship and C&C would be a sort-of battle-carrier rig. Good-size hangar bay, plenty of guns, and enough thrust to do some kind of combat maneuvering.

I'd keep my static stations small and cheap for the most part -- my most valuable research and technology would be kept on the fabber ship, with a good-size escort of cruisers.

This way I can set up a sprawling network of mining operations and trade routes, while staying mobile enough to respond to threats and support my most valuable operations closely.

If I'm sure I can secure it, I'd put down a very large static station as the tech hub and use the fabber ship as something else -- maybe it would carry backups of my most valuable tech. That battle-carrier would remain my flagship, though.

That assumes you managed to isolate the enemy capital ship from it's fleet. Unless the AI is insane. It won't be sending out single costly ships like that. Assume any fight against an enemy fleet is going to be a long affair. Focus on easy attacks and thinning out defenses (fighters) without getting greedy. Battlecruisers would be turned to dogmeat if the enemy capitals have capital sized turrets.

i realy would prefer to have a small frig / cruiser fleet that traps and circles capitals and carriers (maybe with huge torpedo barrages?) and then blink away and watch the slow ships exploading all over the place.

(I realy hope there will be some sort of Arena mod)

swarmmissiles  pointdefenses never stopped me from my favourite tactic in any game so far.

right no blink so i assume that ships could throw off theyre space torpedos at a pretty high range. I also assume that balance wise the realy big ships are slower then the small ships? So fire barrage retreat finish engaging enemy fighters and such, continue to annoy the captials.

(if that isnt going to work in any way, i will just buy the previously mentioned napalmlaser that shoots projectiles.)

How 'bout the Very Dangerous Array (VDA) from Schlock Mercenary?

Independent smart-torpedoes with individual sensor suites. So many of them that they can focus their sensor arrays on suspicious areas of space, or sweep a vast area for enemy materiel.

You pop a few thousand of these and you've got a secure area of several light-minutes around your zone. PLUS, once any threat is detected, you've already got torpedoes out to neutralize the threat.

Basically, it's preemptive target acquisition and remote push-button neutralization in one system!
