If computers could generate stories there'd be no more authors and cleverbot would be a psychotherapist
(kudos to anyone that gets the reference)

Generating a story-like NPC written log is EXTREMELY difficult. I'm not sure the best AI devs in the world could do it, let alone Josh.

A black-box like system is much easier.

Please note, a story is not a black box in sentence form with embelishments.
"Today X ordered us to fly through Y to reach system Z where W might be found" is not a story.

Something like that'd be fine.

Captain's Log, <Date>

Today, <event 1>. I felt <feelings about <event 1>>. Later <event 2>. Afterwards <event 3>. My plans are <planned event 1> / <goal 1>.

Europa Universalis does something like that...although sometimes it gets very repetitive and the English can be a bit odd, but still better than nothing.
