Humblebundle is having a decent looking bundle on a variety of programming books. I haven't read the Head First series so I can't review it in any way, just saw the discount and thought I'd pass along for others to make their own informed decisions...

Ew.
Just get started by joining the IRC and making a bot, that seems to get everyone started :V

I learnt how to program with the head first java book about 10 years ago. It was an excellent start, and I would recommend that particular book to anyone wanting to learn java for the first time. I can't say much about the rest of the series, but I have read a couple of others and they are all very engaging and teach you stuff in memorable ways. They are so much better than any other teaching books I have read, this includes series like for dummies.

Shame Lua was not on the list, otherwise I would have jumped on it.

I also have google calendar set me up with a daily reminder to check Packt. Their free learning page is always giving away books and video courses on a number of subjects from beginner to expert. I have quite an extensive reference library between the freebies and the few books that I have bought from them.

Since Lua might be a specific thing that people here might want to learn, there are a bunch of great learning materials out there.
