Yeah, knowing a little about the technical stuff from the last posts of his.
The basic thing is that he decided that the core of the game wasn't running fast enough, so stripped out the engine, upgraded it into a more modular format, and reimplemented LTSL as Python.

From what I have gleaned from his posts, LT now runs significantly faster, and is significantly easier to mould into being.
Reimplementation of everything will take some time, but one done we will have *easy* access as modders to everything the game offers.

Want to add space nazis? no problem.
Want to make spacecows? no problem.
Want to make each system the interior of a dyson sphere? no problem.
Want to turn the game into a first person shooter? no problem.
Want to turn the game into Dwarf Fortress? no problem.

(This is all inference from what has been stated before, but I put it at 90% confidence)

In fact it seems he might actually be almost finished with the re implementation judging by this post of his last month

I'm more concerned about the line that says:

Which means that LT is just reaching the old point where we last saw it. Assuming that Josh has it in that state by the end of this month, I have a feeling there's going to be 3 or 4 more months of development before beta hits. At least it looks like we might be able to start playing LT before 2017. I do hope we are on the home stretch at this point. It has been a long journey but at least it has generally been a pleasant one.

I'll double his offer. And add 20% extra in cat videos or porn, your choice.

Honestly, if I HAD to put actual dates on estimates I would say beta late this year, full release early 2018. Remember, the beta was originally planned to be released 6 months after the prototype. That estimate was over shot by 600% so far, so just being realistic and putting peoples expectations down to ground level, 2018 for full release seems reasonable.

At this point I quit guessing...that doesn't mean I quit anticipating. I think the few of us here are supportive of Josh and his time frame. The diehards if you will. I may not post a lot but I've been viewing off and on steady since he did the you tube videos. As long as he's moving forward in a healthy manner that's what I wish, truly.

My guess for the release date: Not today.

I've always been right, all along. 100% accuracy.
