Re: Hawkspears: DF Succession Game (Main)

1st of Granite, Year 104

You just know that something terrible happened when overseer Saoirse wakes you up like that.
Even if my name is certainly not "Fawkes", even if she insists (I should put some fertilizer in Urist McFreud's bed for this.)

So, Saoirse here, in my room.

...Telling me that the last year is over and I'm supposed to take over as overseer now.
Apparently Fawkes should've taken over (You're dead! Stop giving me troubles!). And as his "replacement"...I'm supposed to continue the tradition of the changing overseer every year. (That certainly explains the despaired outcries every winter...)

It's actually pretty easy...writing reports, keeping check of our food, keeping us safe, improving the fortress and so on. I imagined it to be worse! BY ARMOK! WHO BUILT THIS?!?
Next was a proper walk through the fortress. It's incredible how much you missed when you only went to the tavern, the fields and your room every day... this is Hawkspears...
Let me just correct something I wrote earlier...
By Armok! 155 dwarves and only 832 drinks?? Also almost no wood left??

As I came past our trading depot, a concerned dwarf stopped me.
"The traps that were placed under overseer Saoirse might block the wagons of the caravans!"
Why didn't he tell her right awa- He's clutching a pudding in his hands...that explains it.
Much to do, I see.

OOC: Ok, I'll try to do my best with the writing here, and wow! This looks exciting!
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

Re: Hawkspears: DF Succession Game (Main)

2nd of Granite, Year 104

Trade depot blocked by traps, a pile of corpses right in front of our entrance, vomit everywhere. Impressive! Let's see what we can do about that.
Image As those traps are actually a pretty good idea, I think I'll leave them there and just build another trade depot. Sadly, there's not really much space close to our entrance and the stockpiles, but we can do that, right?

The problem with the drinks was already taken on by Saoirse, as well as the shortage of usable logs, if the records are anything to go by. I'll just tell some dwarves to get that done right away.

On another note: Children! Right at the start of the year! Rejoice!
Image I have no idea who the proud mother is, but congratulations anyway!

3rd of Granite, Year 104

More babies! If it continues like that we'll be flooded with toddlers!

9th of Granite, Year 104

It's been a while since I last had a relaxed meal at the tavern, someone would always come to me for something! But I guess that's an overseer's job.
So I sit there, chatting with Saoirse about our production of pudding, just as one of the many dogs running around in our tavern jumps up on the table, eats my meal (!) and almosts knocks Saoirse's pudding on the floor! Nothing really serious happened, but when I (admittedly a bit jokingly) mentioned how I wanted every single dog locked up somewhere far away, she jumped up with a determined look, grabbed her pickaxe and rushed off.

I really can't complain about her enthusiasm...
But to help her calm down I'll improve our farms a bit more so we can serve her even more flavours of pudding! For safety.

15th of Granite, Year 104

An elven caravan! It would be great if they brought something useful for once...perhaps some giant war animals? Let's see...I'm sure they don't mind walking through the (not more long) forest we designated for felling. And if they complain? There are still enough trees outside for them. Even some really warm ones with that great, warm water around them. I'll definitely tell them about this!
What do even have for trading...some statues, I guess? And mugs!

20th of Granite, Year 104

What??? Image I have no clue what this is about. But I clap my hands anyway. Can't hurt. (Who is that guy?? What did he do?? ...I...just ignore him until he says something. Good plan!)

24th of Granite, Year 104

We finally got everything to the depot! Now we'll see how useful the elves are...
Not very useful...but a few animals would do our food good. I'll definitely buy that bear, the panda and the cougar. Sadly no breeding pair. Not really sure if I should order the animals butchered immediately or wait with that until next year...perhaps we can get a breeding pair then...

Grown armor, grown weapons, clothes, toys, instruments. Do the elves really have nothing useful aside from their ani- FRUIT!

Just letting our broker finish the deals, when -
Image New migrants! Great! We'll need those additional hands!

Also, the designated bit of forest in the north? It's gone! :D
...That's a lot of migrants...
18 Migrants! Some specialists, some peasants and...Ilral...that's one versatile dwarf. Dear Armok! Image

1st of Slate, Year 104

Apparently we had a ghost around for a while...can we make him our mascot?

8th of Slate, Year 104

The unending trails of vomit, left behind by our haulers worries me to no end. That stuff is really hard to wash out of your socks! I have a general idea what to do about that though...still needs some thinking...I'll let our miners dig some exploratory tunnels deep underground in the meantime. We're low on metals...and some bedrooms for our migrants. I have no clue how many bedrooms we already have...but more can't hurt...right?

28th of Slate, Year 104

It's been almost 2 months now. I think I got used to my new job sufficiently now.
Let's see...Wood shortage, solved so far, farms improved (Even though we have problems with our farms built for overground plants...perhaps I have to order new ones made...)

Saoirse did a great job with our new pen for the dogs! We finally got around to count them and decided to butcher most of the adult dogs. The meat is a welcome resource. Our food reserves increase every day!

Strangely though, our bookkeeper ignores the animals we bought from the elves...I know the elves are mostly annoying, but that's quality meat there! Just give us a chance to get at it already! Image The new bedrooms make great progress already, soon I will order a number of beds and cabinets made. Image Regarding the vomit problem...I think about an outside sculpture garden above the steep slopes of our volcano, roofed with glass and adorned with only our most beautiful statues. Sadly we lack glass for the roof...and I also don't know yet how to organize the cleaning...perhaps with lava from the mountain...?
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

Re: Hawkspears: DF Succession Game (Main)

3rd of Felsite, Year 104
A grand sculpture garden, filled with our finest masonry and cleaned with the mountains blood! With a roof made of clear glass so we can enjoy it even when it rains and snows! I'd have to figure out an easy way to collect and channel the lava first, though. Which might not be all that easy, seeing how closely Hawkspears was built to the volcano.

12th of Felsite, Year 104
Curses! Soil! Right where I wanted a masterfully engraved hallway leading to our sculpture garden! Image Perhaps we can do something with that...putting a - HAH! This might even work out fine! Very good!

25th of Felsite, Year 104
Those humans! Never paying attention to where they're going! Almost running me over today.
I hope they don't start breaking things...really, drunk humans are horrible! Especially when they drink our share of the beer! But I guess we have enough for now. Image
1st of Hematite, Year 104
Summer has come already? Time flies! There's so much to do!
Also, our militia seems to go fine at the moment. I still hope we don't need them. Image
10th of Hematite, Year 104
Progress on the sculpture garden is slowly being made!
Image Image Here I will have a checkered or otherwise pleasant-to-look-at pattern laid down. The floor will turn to the right over the abyss where we will build a platform in the air from where we can look over the whole region!
Above the walkway, the lava from the volcano will be led along, for cleaning, safety and a nice heating during cold winter days!

I do hope though, that the goblins won't attack until we closed of the openings in our fortress...
I also have to admit that this is my first time with, even remotely, handling a volcano. But I am confident that we can do this!

13th of Hematite, Year 104
Another good day to work on the garden! And eating pudding! And drinking a beer made of the plants I harvested myself! Ahh, it's a go-
Image I-I just g-g-got a message from a dwarf busting into my room.
A m-m-monstrosity has appeared!
What should we do?!? What can we do?!? Oh Armok, I'll panic any moment!
I-I-I *Ink splatters everywhere*
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

Re: Hawkspears: DF Succession Game (Main)

13th of Hematite, Year 104 (Afternoon)

I woke up in the hospital. Not really sure how I got there...until our medical dwarves informed me about the situation.
We had a monster in the caverns below. It was flying and spreading a strange dust everywhere...a dust that seemed to have...worrisome effects on the surrounding plants and wildlife. Image Oh...and we had a direct connection into said cavern via a simple well in the ceiling.
If it turns out to be able to use this entry we're probably doomed.
I'll go and see this entry plugged right away! Hope we're not too late.
(Why did nobody tell me about this well?!? And why was it built anyway?!? WHOOO?!?)

16th of Hematite, Year 104

Luckily Xug hasn't found the entrance into our fortress yet. But our scouting teams, utilizing cracks and other means to keep an eye on the beast report of activities. And apparently it can release its dust over a large area. That won't make fighting it any easier. Image
17th of Hematite, Year 104

Start of our sculpture garden's construction!
Horrible beast appearing in the caverns with a potential entrance into our fortress!
THE HUMAN CARAVAN!! Why so early?? Don't they usually come later in the summer?? Image What next?? A goblin invasion?? Image Apparently...a new mayor...huh.
Sorry Devilos, but it seems you have to do with only a single office to your name. Good luck during the next elections.

19th of Hematite, Year 104

Our broker, Devilos (former mayor and all Armok, this dwarf has poor timing!), invited me to the planned meeting with the representant of the human guilds. Apparently they have much to discuss...
"The world is the same as ever."
That's it...huh? For you perhaps. We have a giant monster in our cellar. Thanks. For. Your. Concern!
Without that last one the discussions continue. What we'd like to order from them (Glass, sand, food) and what they especially want to buy from us (Fish...Quivers, musical instruments and anvils). I'm sure we can sell them the animals we have caged...Strangely nobody seems to understand that these animals won't survive forever in the cages...
After that I leave Devilos to the discussions regarding trading wares. While I go back to taking care of more important things. Like...finding out why someone thought it smart to have water flow down our main stairwell until it flows out into the caverns through that well I mentioned earlier. For what reason this was built. I have no idea. But I'll plug this. Image (Our chief medical dwarf informed me about that blood...Goblin well as blood shed by that got there, I don't want to know. Poor dwarf.)

Leather, leather, leather, cloth, cloth...those humans only have leather and cloth with them? (Not only that, of course...but mostly.) And meat, lots of it. That we'll take.
I'm sure they like animals in cages that won't open just as they like the grown trinkets we got from I-don't-know-where. Also amulets, some scepters, trinkets...a well-worn sock...(I hope those humans leave soon...before they corrupt our citizens...)

8th of Malachite, Year 104

It's too late, damned humans! Image One of our Marksdwarves got obsessed with his crossbow! What's next? Will he give it a name?

Also: Image While praying in our pudding-blessed temple, someone was hit by celestial inspiration!
He went on to claim a Craftsdwarf's workshop...I'm curious...

11th of Malachite, Year 104

Zaneg found everything he wanted...that was fast! I wonder what he'll make...though I'm not particularly excited about his chosen tools...

16th of Malachite, Year 104

He's done! It's...a ring! Made Image Image The fight of a blind cave ogre against an olm woman? Here, in Hawkspears?

20th of Malachite, Year 104

Another of our military fell to the seductive charms of his equipment! The humans and their strange habits really corrupted our military! Image
3rd of Galena, Year 104

Another batch of 10 migrants arrived! Very good! Now get that wood hauled and those walls constructed!

25th of Galena, Year 104

I- I made a mistake. Oh Armok, I'm so sorry. In preparation for the cleaning mechanism of the sculpture garden I told one of our miners, Kivish Kubukkor, to dig through the walls of the volcano. The first entry went off without a hitch. But after he breached the second channel he stumbled before he could reach the door to safety. Oh god I'm so sorry! Image And now even our guests in the tavern start fighting over I-don't-know-what...I don't feel up for it right now... Image
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

Re: Hawkspears: DF Succession Game (Main)

11th of Limestone, Year 104

Merchants from the mountainhomes have arrived. Time really flies!
And once again I've been invited to the discussions. Thanks, Devilos. I really wouldn't know what to do with my time if you didn't drag me to your meetings.
Image Yes, I know Hawkspears is impressive! Our founders and overseers really know how to turn a volcano into a bustling home!
What we need though...metals won't hurt, I guess. As well as more food and containers for our drinks.
And you want crowns and windows? I thought you said the world was the same as ever? When did a child get on the throne at the mountainhomes??
...I'll see what we can do about that.

22nd of Limestone, Year 104

Work on the proper flooring to the sculpture garden have begun. I shall look forward to its completition...even though I'm not sure if I will still be overseer then...

...I wonder where Devilos is...I asked him to take care of the tradings a few days ago already...
Image You...You're kidding, right? After some hours of fruitless searching, I found him in the temple. Where he was meditating. On the weather! The Weather! He was talking about clouds! And the sun! And wind! I fear he might be getting sober down here!

23rd of Limestone, Year 104

He moved! Devilos moved! He's finally going to the trade depot! And after that to a drink on my order. Can't have him get even more sober now!
A few metal bars, all their drinks, some cloth, some leather...why do they have 2 wagons full of leather?

13th of Sandstone, Year 104

Things proceed nicely so far. Soon we can begin the construction of the main platform! Also, the traders left a bit back, but as we lack a bit of storage space, many things still clutter the depot. I'll have some rooms dug ou-
There's a note? Apparently they forgot it here? Let's see...
Image Duchy? We are a duchy now? And of course they forgot to tell us...?
Don't care! We're a duchy! I'll tell everyone right away and then we'll have a party! With Beer! And Pudding! And Ale! And more Pudding! I'm so excited right now!

16th of Sandstone, Year 104

This was a grand party, by Armok! We literally dug through the meals! Everyone ate so mu-
Image Huh? Who? What? Uh... ... Party! (?)

18th of Sandstone, Year 104

By Armok, I have the most horrible headache right now...I need air!
Image *Big ink splatter that might be interpreted as "AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"*

18th of Sandstone, Year 104 (Afternoon)

It's horrible! The Roc was too fast. Before we could pull the lever to raise the drawbridge I had installed to close this entry to our fortress, it had already rushed past. It caught up with some fleeing dwarves while our military assembled at the crossing. Four dwarves died during this initial attack before our military managed to drive the Roc away.
Image Zuglar Onulnaka.
Thikut Rigothustir.
Ezum Roderavuz.
And lastly our friend and respected broker, Devilos Kolkubuk.
I couldn't keep you safe during the attack. Forgive me...

23rd of Sandstone, Year 104

Geralt Ilulled of Hawkspears (Strange name...huh). A real dwarf struck down the roc with his spear! It was a great fight on top of our mountainhome!
Image After we repelled it during its first vicious attack at our fortress, it fled and flew high up into the air! But the temptation that our pastured animals posed proved too strong for the beast. It slaughtered many of our pets, but in doing so it just tired itself out! As its eyes were laid onto a rabbit, our brave military dwarves stormed outside and surrounded the Roc!
Image Image Image From how the beasts corpse looks, it was practically ripped apart by our brave soldiers!
We will now lay our fallen to rest and raise our mugs to their honors! Hawkspears stands proud, even in the face of fires and monsters! We will feast on Roc tonight!
Our new broker will be Edzul Lasheddodok. Thank you honestly for your services to Hawkspears, Devilos!

3rd of Timber, Year 104

Clean-up is going along well. The Roc is butchered and our kitchens run hot!
Like many of the citizens I paid our temple a visit to thank the gods for our militaries prowess.
Image And apparently the pudding claimed one of the praying dwarves for a mysterious construction! He mumbled something of jewels. Praise the pudding!
And right now I got a notice from the kitchens. It seems we'll have the pleasure to feast on Roc for quite some time, I might say.
15th of Timber, Year 104

The pudding-blessed construction is done! It's a jewel puzzlebox!
Image Image It even shows another Artifact we made here in Hawkspears! Wonderful!

23rd of Timber, Year 104

I just noticed the literal mountains of Roc tallow we have lieing around now...but we have no soaper's workshop! Can't have that! We'll not only feast on it, we'll also wash ourselves with the Roc! Take that, beast!

What the-?? I inspected the progress on the planned lava flow and noticed something strange and worrying...
Image Goblin blood! But we haven't seen one of those since last year! How did their blood get on here??
I have the nagging suspicion that they learned to fly somehow...but we'll only can be certain about that when one of them crashes down on us!

26th of Timber, Year 104

I found even more blood! Keep your eyes open, everyone! They're in the skies!
6th of Moonstone, Year 104

Winter has come, the year has almost passed. And to the occasion, some of the trees outside decided to fall over due to the lava gnawing at their trunks! I like this sound! It fits this season perfectly!
14th of Moonstone, Year 104

Geralt, brave Speardwarf of Hawkspears. He and his newly named, trusty steel spear. It's a good day to name the weapon that struck the Roc down! "Nikuz Kat - The Pride of Goals" A worthy name.
24th of Moonstone, Year 104

Honestly, I really like Feb, our undead Trader. And he apparently likes Urist McFreud for whatever reason.
Image "Hawkspears! Our mascot is a ghost and our therapist approves!"
...We need a sign with exact these words!

22nd of Opal, Year 104

We need medical staff immediately! Two idiots managed to throw each other off of the building site of our planned sculpture garden!
Image Image One is dead and the other one severely wounded! I told them so often to be careful and not approach the edge when sober! Why couldn't they listen?!
I'm glad now that I bought some gypsum plaster from the dwarven caravan!
...Why are there no supplies in our hospital? Why do people live in our hospital?!? WHY DIDN'T I LOOK AT OUR HOSPITAL EARLIER?!?

25th of Opal, Year 104

Cerol Eshonsazir, the survivor of the accident, succumbed to his wounds today.
I feel like I could've prevented that...

27th of Obsidian, Year 104

The last month was extremely busy. We put some good progress into a few projects I ordered over the year.
When I think about what we started with in regards to food...We're off much better now.
Our drinks approach the maximum of available containers, and we also sit on a (pretty much literal) mountain of prepared meals now.
Image As for Xug, the beast roaming our caverns. I have thought up a little...surprise for it...seeing that we don't know what its dust does to a dwarf, we're limited in our military options. So I went for something
We'll bait, trap and isolate Xug when he appears next time.
Image I set up a quite simple isolation chamber for it. When it enters the chamber to destroy the placed floodgate, we can pull the right lever to raise the 4 bridges, effectively shutting it in. Then we can let water from the cistern a number of floors above down to wash the dust away. If needed we can also drown Xug with that...I labeled all used levers for safeties concerns.
(The troll was an accident! We can flush him out later or use him as secondary bait for Xug. It also proves my concept!)

Our expanded dormitory is being furnished too, so we shouldn't have problems with raising population anytime soon.
Image Now to my personal seems that the sculpture garden won't finish this year, sadly.
Image But we got past the most pressing obstacles already, so that's a plus in my book.
(As before, every lever labeled.)
I'll leave the final design of the garden to my successor because I don't think I can go on like that next year. There are a number of deaths to my name now. To me...a common farmer! Sometimes I think I should've never accepted this position...but what happened, happened. I can't turn time back, but I can give the reign to someone who's potentially better suited.

And after this year, seeing quite a bit of death around me...I thought about myself.
When I die, I'd like to be laid to rest somewhere I know. Somewhere near the farms where I worked all the time.
Image I asked Saoirse if she couldn't dig out a small room near our farms...I then tended to the soil there myself. I also set up the coffin and a small memorial slab for the original Fawkes. People insist to call me with his name, so it's just fair to give this little acknowledgement. Even if he's already laid to rest in the founder's grave. This should've been his year.
Some may call this the grave of an elf. But I think a farmer should be with his fields.

28th of Obsidian, Year 104

People are busy preparing for the new year. Cleaning the fortress, cooking food...
Or in a certain case, going nuts...
Image As in completely crazy, I mean. He even went rushing through the fortress just to throw himself into a workshop...

1st of Granite, Year 105

I spent the night in the tavern, celebrating the coming of the new year.
I told Saoirse that I can't continue overseeing Hawkspears, and to my surprise, she agreed with me. Overseer is a horrible job. There are always people coming to you, telling you things you don't care about. And they don't seem to tire from that either.

Well...the only thing left, so I was told, was to appoint a successor. Someone to lead Hawkspears through the next year. That's what I'll spent today on. Perhaps someone suitable turns up.
People always called me with the name of one of our founders. So I guess just this one time I'll sign with his name.
May the year 105 turn out better than the last year.
This is my report as an overseer over the dwarven Fortress Hawkspears in the Year 104. I'll give this responsibility to the next one now.

Signed with his name,
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.
