11th of Limestone, Year 104
Merchants from the mountainhomes have arrived. Time really flies!
And once again I've been invited to the discussions. Thanks, Devilos. I really wouldn't know what to do with my time if you didn't drag me to your meetings.
Yes, I know Hawkspears is impressive! Our founders and overseers really know how to turn a volcano into a bustling home!
What we need though...metals won't hurt, I guess. As well as more food and containers for our drinks.
And you want crowns and windows? And...toys? I thought you said the world was the same as ever? When did a child get on the throne at the mountainhomes??
...I'll see what we can do about that.
22nd of Limestone, Year 104
Work on the proper flooring to the sculpture garden have begun. I shall look forward to its completition...even though I'm not sure if I will still be overseer then...
...I wonder where Devilos is...I asked him to take care of the tradings a few days ago already...
You...You're kidding, right? After some hours of fruitless searching, I found him in the temple. Where he was meditating. On the weather! The Weather! He was talking about clouds! And the sun! And wind! I fear he might be getting sober down here!
23rd of Limestone, Year 104
He moved! Devilos moved! He's finally going to the trade depot! And after that to a drink on my order. Can't have him get even more sober now!
A few metal bars, all their drinks, some cloth, some leather...why do they have 2 wagons full of leather?
13th of Sandstone, Year 104
Things proceed nicely so far. Soon we can begin the construction of the main platform! Also, the traders left a bit back, but as we lack a bit of storage space, many things still clutter the depot. I'll have some rooms dug ou-
There's a note? Apparently they forgot it here? Let's see...
Duchy? We are a duchy now? And of course they forgot to tell us...?
Don't care! We're a duchy! I'll tell everyone right away and then we'll have a party! With Beer! And Pudding! And Ale! And more Pudding! I'm so excited right now!
16th of Sandstone, Year 104
This was a grand party, by Armok! We literally dug through the meals! Everyone ate so mu-
Huh? Who? What? Uh... ... Party! (?)
18th of Sandstone, Year 104
By Armok, I have the most horrible headache right now...I need air!
*Big ink splatter that might be interpreted as "AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"*
MILITARY!!!!
18th of Sandstone, Year 104 (Afternoon)
It's horrible! The Roc was too fast. Before we could pull the lever to raise the drawbridge I had installed to close this entry to our fortress, it had already rushed past. It caught up with some fleeing dwarves while our military assembled at the crossing. Four dwarves died during this initial attack before our military managed to drive the Roc away.
Zuglar Onulnaka.
Thikut Rigothustir.
Ezum Roderavuz.
And lastly our friend and respected broker, Devilos Kolkubuk.
I couldn't keep you safe during the attack. Forgive me...
23rd of Sandstone, Year 104
Geralt Ilulled of Hawkspears (Strange name...huh). A real dwarf struck down the roc with his spear! It was a great fight on top of our mountainhome!
After we repelled it during its first vicious attack at our fortress, it fled and flew high up into the air! But the temptation that our pastured animals posed proved too strong for the beast. It slaughtered many of our pets, but in doing so it just tired itself out! As its eyes were laid onto a rabbit, our brave military dwarves stormed outside and surrounded the Roc!
From how the beasts corpse looks, it was practically ripped apart by our brave soldiers!
We will now lay our fallen to rest and raise our mugs to their honors! Hawkspears stands proud, even in the face of fires and monsters! We will feast on Roc tonight!
Our new broker will be Edzul Lasheddodok. Thank you honestly for your services to Hawkspears, Devilos!
3rd of Timber, Year 104
Clean-up is going along well. The Roc is butchered and our kitchens run hot!
Like many of the citizens I paid our temple a visit to thank the gods for our militaries prowess.
And apparently the pudding claimed one of the praying dwarves for a mysterious construction! He mumbled something of jewels. Praise the pudding!
And right now I got a notice from the kitchens. It seems we'll have the pleasure to feast on Roc for quite some time, I might say.
15th of Timber, Year 104
The pudding-blessed construction is done! It's a jewel puzzlebox!
It even shows another Artifact we made here in Hawkspears! Wonderful!
23rd of Timber, Year 104
I just noticed the literal mountains of Roc tallow we have lieing around now...but we have no soaper's workshop! Can't have that! We'll not only feast on it, we'll also wash ourselves with the Roc! Take that, beast!
What the-?? I inspected the progress on the planned lava flow and noticed something strange and worrying...
Goblin blood! But we haven't seen one of those since last year! How did their blood get on here??
I have the nagging suspicion that they learned to fly somehow...but we'll only can be certain about that when one of them crashes down on us!
26th of Timber, Year 104
I found even more blood! Keep your eyes open, everyone! They're in the skies!
6th of Moonstone, Year 104
Winter has come, the year has almost passed. And to the occasion, some of the trees outside decided to fall over due to the lava gnawing at their trunks! I like this sound! It fits this season perfectly!
14th of Moonstone, Year 104
Geralt, brave Speardwarf of Hawkspears. He and his newly named, trusty steel spear. It's a good day to name the weapon that struck the Roc down! "Nikuz Kat - The Pride of Goals" A worthy name.
24th of Moonstone, Year 104
Honestly, I really like Feb, our undead Trader. And he apparently likes Urist McFreud for whatever reason.
"Hawkspears! Our mascot is a ghost and our therapist approves!"
...We need a sign with exact these words!
22nd of Opal, Year 104
We need medical staff immediately! Two idiots managed to throw each other off of the building site of our planned sculpture garden!
One is dead and the other one severely wounded! I told them so often to be careful and not approach the edge when sober! Why couldn't they listen?!
I'm glad now that I bought some gypsum plaster from the dwarven caravan!
...Why are there no supplies in our hospital? Why do people live in our hospital?!? WHY DIDN'T I LOOK AT OUR HOSPITAL EARLIER?!?
25th of Opal, Year 104
Cerol Eshonsazir, the survivor of the accident, succumbed to his wounds today.
I feel like I could've prevented that...
27th of Obsidian, Year 104
The last month was extremely busy. We put some good progress into a few projects I ordered over the year.
When I think about what we started with in regards to food...We're off much better now.
Our drinks approach the maximum of available containers, and we also sit on a (pretty much literal) mountain of prepared meals now.
As for Xug, the beast roaming our caverns. I have thought up a little...surprise for it...seeing that we don't know what its dust does to a dwarf, we're limited in our military options. So I went for something less...direct.
We'll bait, trap and isolate Xug when he appears next time.
I set up a quite simple isolation chamber for it. When it enters the chamber to destroy the placed floodgate, we can pull the right lever to raise the 4 bridges, effectively shutting it in. Then we can let water from the cistern a number of floors above down to wash the dust away. If needed we can also drown Xug with that...I labeled all used levers for safeties concerns.
(The troll was an accident! We can flush him out later or use him as secondary bait for Xug. It also proves my concept!)
Our expanded dormitory is being furnished too, so we shouldn't have problems with raising population anytime soon.
Now to my personal project...it seems that the sculpture garden won't finish this year, sadly.
But we got past the most pressing obstacles already, so that's a plus in my book.
(As before, every lever labeled.)
I'll leave the final design of the garden to my successor because I don't think I can go on like that next year. There are a number of deaths to my name now. To me...a common farmer! Sometimes I think I should've never accepted this position...but what happened, happened. I can't turn time back, but I can give the reign to someone who's potentially better suited.
And after this year, seeing quite a bit of death around me...I thought about myself.
When I die, I'd like to be laid to rest somewhere I know. Somewhere near the farms where I worked all the time.
I asked Saoirse if she couldn't dig out a small room near our farms...I then tended to the soil there myself. I also set up the coffin and a small memorial slab for the original Fawkes. People insist to call me with his name, so it's just fair to give this little acknowledgement. Even if he's already laid to rest in the founder's grave. This should've been his year.
Some may call this the grave of an elf. But I think a farmer should be with his fields.
28th of Obsidian, Year 104
People are busy preparing for the new year. Cleaning the fortress, cooking food...
Or in a certain case, going nuts...
As in completely crazy, I mean. He even went rushing through the fortress just to throw himself into a workshop...
1st of Granite, Year 105
I spent the night in the tavern, celebrating the coming of the new year.
I told Saoirse that I can't continue overseeing Hawkspears, and to my surprise, she agreed with me. Overseer is a horrible job. There are always people coming to you, telling you things you don't care about. And they don't seem to tire from that either.
Well...the only thing left, so I was told, was to appoint a successor. Someone to lead Hawkspears through the next year. That's what I'll spent today on. Perhaps someone suitable turns up.
People always called me with the name of one of our founders. So I guess just this one time I'll sign with his name.
May the year 105 turn out better than the last year.
This is my report as an overseer over the dwarven Fortress Hawkspears in the Year 104. I'll give this responsibility to the next one now.
Signed with his name,
Fawkes.
