I found this free roguelike JRPG yesterday. It is quite difficult to get into (the learning curve appears to be more of a sheer cliff) but there is a pretty good help file as well as an actual wiki. There is a main quest, but you can ignore it; basically you can just do whatever you want- whether it be becoming an adventurer known throughout the land or playing the piano in bars. It's pretty fun, not the best controls or game mechanics but it's a solid game that's absolutely tiny and free.

Oh, and you can choose to make your player-character's race a SNAIL. And yes, as a snail, salt does kill you.

There is also an expanded version made by members of the community that adds new content and functionality, called Elona+. Use it at your own risk, though! This link is the download link, since the actual Elona+ site is in Japanese.
