Re: Best Game AI You've Ever Seen?

My problem is I haven't seen good AI yet. Mediocre is the best I've seen.

The problem (I believe) is due to the space sim genre not being as developed as other genres, and thus the AI ideas surrounding zero-g ship dogfighting hasn't really progressed much. You're in a little bit of uncharted waters here Josh. Just, if you happen to create something good, be sure to document the hell out of it and write a white paper.

again this topic IS highly opinionated. but i have to agree with you. while ai for like fps combat games have seen considerable improvement. the AI needed for LT need to be flexible and adaptive (which josh has done a terrific job in assuring us they will be :D )
in that they dont have a lot of compitition. most space fighters are overshadowed by whats attempted here with LT.

yep.
If I've rambled and gone off topic im sorry but i tend to be long winded as you might notice if you stumble across my other post XD. thanks for reading.

While the "admiral AI" could use some work, fighting the AI in small tactical engagements can be very difficult. The AI flanks constantly, stays just outside of your weapon range, aims for the engines a lot, and can really punish you for making mistakes.

If the AI in Limit Theory comes close to Starfarer's, I'll be enjoying LT quite a bit.
I likes me a bit of Starfarer!

For me, it's Galactic Civilisations 2. The AI is an absolute monster.

I play a lot of Left 4 Dead 2 (500 hours logged) and the AI in that game is a tale of two halves. For those that don't know, the game is always played with a team of four humans fighting zombie hordes of superior numbers and a smaller number of "special infected" enemies with specialised abilities and tactics. The premise of the game is basically that your team must cooperate and stick together to survive, and the game will do its best to divide you.

If you don't have human teammates to join you, bots fill the roles. The bots at first appear quite lifelike, but in any of the harder game modes they quickly reveal themselves to be dumb as rocks. Because quick wits and clever gameplay are the key to success, the game is a bust without human teammates.

The enemy AI on the other hand is quite effective. Whilst each of the enemies themselves are not so smart, they are inserted into the game by the "Director." The Director is an AI which oversees the game and reacts to your decisions. Hesitate too much and you will be punished with a flash mob of zombies, wander off alone and a special infected will spawn near you to punish your foolishness. Sometimes the linear routes of progression through the game change subtly on replays - certains paths closing and others opening - to keep you on your toes.

The Director is the most interesting aspect of the game's AI and something I hadn't seen in a game before.
Experiencing a significant gravitas shortfall

I agree with DWMagus: I haven't seen really good AI yet.

Sometimes AI was great one time, but then made a stupendous error 10 minutes down the line. That's mediocre. Unless intentional, but it wasn't.

I disagree with XCOM, I saw it mentioned twice in this thread and cannot imagine why. I play on hard and the AI is not smart at all. In fact, the AI from one level of difficulty to the next does not change one bit: it just skews your chances of hitting. This means that when it displays 80% hit chance it is a lie: on easy it's actually 95% chance and on hard it's 55% chance (I do not know the actual numbers). I feel this is insanely wrong.
I also have had numerous times in XCOM that they could have gotten an easy kill on a solitary soldier and they went into hiding and damaged my frontline instead of massacaring her from up close as they should have.

I've seen a number of AIs be very good at a portion of their role, but none that are universally good. And a lot of games cheat in order to increase AI difficulty rather than improving the AI's capabilities. I'm looking at you , Starcraft 2! The Insane AI gets magical extra resources in order to still be a viable enemy, rather than having an greater intelligence. I hate that cop-out.

interesting topic and a big problem for most games. AI is hard to program, therefor not many burden themselves with the task.I remember
FreeSpace 2 had excellent NPC's as far as shooting at enemies and following orders i give them goes. Homeworld had a... decent? i guess AI, altho i've lost cruisers because they tried to move trough some other ship. The AI from those games should be a good starting point, since it uses the same 3D system LT is going to need.

I'm new here but I'm just going to jump right in. Sword of the Stars has some pretty good AI. There are 6 playable races and since each race has a unique fom of FTL, each race has a different play style. The tech tree has a random element to it with each race having a different chance of progressing along a particular tech line so the tech available is different in each game you play and the AI has to take this into account. Because you never know what techs you might end up with, there's no "best" path to victory. I've played quite a few games and you're just as likly to get you head handed to you as you are to come out on top.
Cowards die many times before their deaths, the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders that I have seen, it seem to me most strange, that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.

this all I agree with 100 percent, I have never played a game with such an AI, if you want to know, try it out! the AI is very immersive, they will actively build influence stations next to you to steal planets, while also mining resources that will make either more or less money, they, from what I've seen will even actively, strategically, attack you and I feel like I am sometimes staring into it's face in-game the AI in GC2 I believe is great! now the only 2 problems I can think of in this case are for one, even AS strategical as this AI is probably the only problem to LT, and that's that the space battles aren't controlled by either player, it's dependent on who has the bigger stick and who has the most sticks. so my belief, Josh, is if you were to look at GC2 and try to improve on even more the AI they convey, then you're only problem left would be the individual AI being commanded within the strategic AI.

Oh yes, and after reading every page of the review posted by HowSerendipitous, AND after [playing the game faithfully for years, I can honostly say that I think anyone looking for a capable AI with superior tactics should read this, along with much humor it describes many of the troubles that a good AI may posses against you. Josh, if you have the time please read this link posted by HowSerendipitous: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/16 ... /?site=pcg
