Not one of my pics, but the ship and nebulae are definitely mods. Mind you, the core ships are very similar, but lack shadery goodness. Core planets have been revamped though - see here.
So tell me what I need to get the best out of the game, wise Oolite man? The links to the most glorious game mods would be very much appreciated, Cody. :D

Hmm... I use these (via the in-game expansion manager):

Code: Select all

E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/cim.gsagostinho.systemfeatures.rings.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.cim.camera-drones.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.cim.comms-pack-a.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.cim.ships-library.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.cody.green-gecko-xl.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.Commander_McLane.Randomshipnames.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.hoqllnq.missile-beep.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.phkb.DisplayCurrentCourse.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddOns/oolite.oxp.spara.navigation_mfd.oxz
    E:\Oolite-Trunk/oolite.app/GNUstep/Library/ApplicationSupport/Oolite/ManagedAddO/oolite.oxp.spara.griff_normalmapped_ships_replace.oxz

That last one should automatically download and install all Griff's ship and station textures.

And minus a few customised expansions, I use these too (some of which may need hunting down via the Wiki/Forum/Main Page):

Code: Select all

../AddOns/3dFont.oxz
    ../AddOns/BGS2.4.oxz
    ../AddOns/BeerCooler1.0.1.oxp
    ../AddOns/BountyStatus 1.00.oxp
    ../AddOns/Display Reputation-1.2.oxp
    ../AddOns/Target Autolock Plus 1.12.oxp
    ../AddOns/Deep_Horizon_Nav_Buoy.oxp
    ../AddOns/Escort_Formations_1.2.oxz
    ../AddOns/GalTech Escape Pods v1.10.oxp
    ../AddOns/Library1.6.oxz
    ../AddOns/moar_rocks_1.0.oxz
    ../AddOns/oolite.oxp.cim.skilled-npcs.oxz
    ../AddOns/Tori2.02.oxp
Plus Zygo Cinematic Sky and Nebulae and a hud of your choice (the Dangerous Hud is rather attractive).

If I start adding links, I'll get confused.

If you're a virgin Jameson, you probably don't want Skilled NPCs or Green Gecko installed - they can be harsh!
Thanks for the heads up, Cody. I used to be Elite Jameson some years ago in the original Elite game but I've never done much more than install an early version of Oolite.

It would be nice to see a few screenshots of Oolite at its prettiest.
Searching for pics on the www I cannot tell whether they are A) old, B) current, or C) purposely enhanced via game-mods or photoshop.

Some clarity would be lovely

If you hadn't found it, the Gallery on Oolite's website has a fair few screenshots, some older, some newer. There's a bunch of my pics here, most of which are current. Thing is, Oolite's been constantly evolving for years - it'd be impossible to sort screenshots.

Thank you, Cody, for the list.
I have downloaded Oolite (yet again) and the expansions you picked. Let us hope this time I can get a feel for it.

Now, 4 quick things for you:

1) About ../AddOns/Escort_Formations_1.2.oxz
You wrote _1.2.oxz but the only version I could find is _1.1.oxz
Where is 1.2?

2) I cannot find: ../AddOns/moar_rocks_1.0.oxz and ../AddOns/Tori2.02.oxp
Where are they, and what are they about?

Then this one, which I noticed by myself:
3) The expansion: Ship Configuration (this one)
I like the concept of it, but I wonder if it integrates properly with the vanilla game.
I understand how and why it makes the game more difficult for the player.
But what about the AI? They are subject to the same rules as the player (this much the mod says), but are the NPC ships equipped correctly, according to such rules, or not?

And finally:
4) Any controller support??
I have an Xbox360 controller. Does Oolite work with it?
Are there issues? Tough to configure? <Other>?

Ciao ciao

Re: Oolite

Made my first few runs with the game tonight.

AUDIO:
I must say that I do not like the sounds. (personally) I find them lousy and totally lackluster. Same for the main menu music.
The audio department is murdering any joy I manage to build up for learning things.

VIDEO:
I can live with the graphics now that a few mods have improved it.

GAMEPLAY:
I did not really have the time to start digging, but one big, huge, problem has surfaced: the word PRIME

SMURFING:
("hey what do you want to eat for dinner? -- hey, I know! Let us prime some frys")
("what prime is it?" -- oh, it is... 20 past 12 in the prime")
("would you prime that button for me, please?" -- "sure, no prime" -- "prime you very much")
("Ah... Aaahhh... AAT-PRIIIIIIME!" -- "Prime You! Got a cold?" -- "*sniff* yeah, I prime so")

So far the only usage of prime I met was in Optimus Prime. And that was just a name to be taken as-is.
Now, I find this word [ab]used in a videogame. It is all over the place, more common than sand grains in a desert(!), and I feel like they are talking some elitist language (no pun intended) just for the sake of it.

Can you explain me the meaning of "prime" in the context of Oolite/Elite?
(Do I correctly assume that my spaceship will not smurf into a truck at any point?)

<chortles> I run with audio mostly disabled, only keeping flight/combat effects - my cockpit is full of music.
As for prime - that usually refers to priming equipment. Does the XBox controller work okay?

Pretty! Mod or New build?

I am still coming to terms with Oolite. I will not try a Controller until I get an idea of which controls I want to use the most.
Moving my first steps as a trader between Lave and Zaong, I found a lucrative run. Slow money, but sure money.
It is enjoyable enough, but now my problems are 2 (really 3):

FIRST) Once in a while I get attacked by a group of ships that welcome me as I exit witchspace. With a ship underequipped because I lack credits (because, just started!) that means a Death Sentence.
I have to resort to savescumming to counter the unfair treatment. Hopefully things will become easier once I buy the Witchspace Injectors.
(based on their item description I assume that they add [to my ship] something kin to a speed-boost capability. Am I right?)

SECOND) How the hell do you quickly find the station??
Currently I follow a self-taught pattern:
1) beam the planet (put it at my 3 or 9 o'clock, depends) more or less facing the local star.
2) hyperdrive for about 10 seconds in a straight line, so I am off the traffic lane.

(and then, assuming that I do not get attacked)

3) face the planet, hyperdrive to it until it is at my side. Stop, and turn around to face it.

4) At this point I am in front of the lit face of the planet, looking at it, with the star roughly at my back.
The Station is somewhere in my front hemispace, more precisely it is between me and the planet's equator line.
But to find it I must rely on visual contact, which can take minutes, especially when asteroids are present.
Is there a fast way to locate the Station?

and THIRD) The sounds. Boy, do they suck! This game is in desperate need of a mod to *oomph* the sound department.
Not asking to make it like ED (though I would not spit on it :P ), but, well, any sound enhancement would be a great addition to the game.
