The story of my universe.

#1
----
I like lore in games. This text is what I imagined could be the history of a civilisation/faction in the LT universe, using what little we actually know about LT's features.
Call it fan fiction if you like. For me it's more about creating a back story for my character. (So this story might change when we get more information about LT's features and gameplay.)
Please forgive my shoddy writing, I'm an amateur in every aspect. :)

Wormholes:
Worm holes were more common than anyone would have guessed. It was discovered that each star has a resonance field that travels through superspace at a speed far exceeding light speed. When the fields of two stars are compatible, a wormhole is created, linking the two systems through superspace. Systems of similar mass and stars of similar age have a higher chance to generate compatible fields. Worm holes will collapse when they're created too close or too far away from a gravity well. This effectively results in a wormhole sweet-spot in a given star system.
Because of the similar properties of linked systems, explorers weren't surprised to bump into star-systems not unlike their home, with habitable, sometimes even inhabited planets and exploitable resources.

Early evolution of the space races:
Almost any race that mastered space exploration within their own system, sooner or later discovered resonance fields and wormholes. Space was suddenly full of life. Over the course of hundreds of years, entire civilisations started exploring and colonising space. A critical mass was achieved and suddenly it all exploded. Some of the civilisations joining the stars considered space to be owned by no-one. Their inhabitants were free to explore the stars and settle where-ever they liked. Only bound by a moral code, but no enforceable laws.
Lesser civilisations were assimilated, enslaved, conquered, influenced or even forcefully evolved. Without universal communication the different races and civilisations were unable to clear up even the smallest of misunderstandings. Yet the failings of any individual were credited to their entire civilization. Soon, major wars broke out all over the universe.

The universe at war:
War brings with it a new kind of scientist and discoveries, it breeds scientists who learn how to destroy things in the most effective ways. Universally there were huge improvements in weapons, armour and propulsion. Methods of mass extraction of resources were researched, as was robotics and cloning.
Though the situation was largely the same in the entire universe, different civilisations created very different solutions to their problems and unique adversaries. Aggressive civilisations started developing stronger weapons, others developed all kinds of energy fields or camouflage. Some civilisations even made discoveries that would let them open and close the wormholes themselves.
Due to the wormholes being tunnels it soon became apparent to create gates and blockades with automated defences around them, in protection of these bottlenecks. Since it became very costly and nigh impossible to breach a blockaded gate, a state of cold war ensued almost universally.

The xenophobic age:
The cold war were decennia of mistrust, fear and stagnation. Instead of exploring the universe again, entire civilisations stayed locked up in a few star systems, feverishly defending their home planet and nearest colonies. Contact with far away colonies lost by gate blockades or shut-downs. Wormhole travel all but disappeared, with even the smallest ship being targeted by the gate defences.
Slowly but surely population levels were rising everywhere again. Habited planets united under a single banner and assigned leaders to protect their interests. The factions were born.
Different civilisations created factions according to very different systems, but one thing could be said for all of them. The factions were created to take care of the civilization aligned with them. They were given control over the military, global market and banks, in return for luxury and protection. Many civilisations designed their factions as an overseer, giving jobs to people that are to the betterment of the entire faction. Others designed a totalitarian faction, some have even reported encountering a faction that is controlled by the hive mind of their entire civilization.
With the factions taking care of every need using robotics and mass resource extraction, money and wealth soon became meaningless. Progress stagnated because nothing was propelling these civilisations forward any more, everybody was content.

The pop:
Almost three hundred years ago from today, it happened in our system. The event we now call "the pop".
Our radar and defence system detected nothing, yet there it suddenly was. An alien ship appeared just outside our system. We were woken up from our blissful dream of a lonely and safe universe. The ship landed on a large asteroid and powered down. Scientists were sent on an expedition and returned triumphant. And with them, the universe suddenly became a lot smaller.

A new age:
Little by little rumours turned reality. We had been contacted by an unknown alien civilization using an unmanned ship. They had discovered a way to create a resonance field using a miniature black hole and a delicate fusing process, creating artificial and temporary superspace tunnels. They also discovered how to undercharge a jump so you could exit superspace at any point in between.
But their most important gift to us, is the universal AI. It's unthinkable in this age to be without this device. It can connect with any data stream and learn the protocol. It can decipher languages and numbers, it can even convert most numbers like the relative passing of time and different units of weight, distance, speed and even money.
We don't know why we were given this gift, but it turned out we weren't the only recipients. With this new technology the universe opened up again, xenophobia made way for curiosity in the younger generations and communication with neighbouring civilisations was attempted.
What started small with secret talks at undisclosed locations ended up creating a multi civilization culture. Slowly but surely gates were unlocked for everybody. Citizens started exploring again, away from the protection of their faction. An exchange of cultures happened everywhere.
Factions slowly changed together with their civilisation. They allowed aliens of a good reputation to create factories or generate new businesses inside their borders, while still controlling the military and regional bank. Regional markets opened up with the arrival of the first alien stations, no longer were the factions sole owners of their sector.

Current day:
We still don't know who our benefactors were. They changed the universe without taking credit. The U-AI was tested thoroughly and deemed 100% secure. Thanks to its open design and built-in limitation for sending information it was deemed impossible to abuse the U-AI to influence other systems or computers.
Our citizens are free to go, free to explore, to build and trade. So far our species has travelled through hundreds if not thousands of systems. We have faced the general hostility of the universe, and in doing so embraced other civilisations and cultures through exploration and trade.
The U-AI didn't perform miracles however. There are still factions out there that are wary of aliens, or those that are in desperate need of resources and willing to fight for it. The universe is still a dangerous place. You'll find heavily protected and policed core sectors, surrounded by buffer sectors. Trade lanes are patrolled and harvesting local resources require an exploitation licence, only available to entities in good standing with the region's faction. Piracy and the poaching of resources is an ongoing problem, the factions' military and police force does try to enforce the laws, but space is big and criminals often escape. Criminal acts by individuals are treated as such and have no repercussions for their faction. Organised crime however is dealt with on a larger scale.
The Resonance Drive, another gift, allows us to travel to distant star-systems through superspace. Not only have we been experimenting with ships that create their own wormholes, we're also working on deployable gates that will allow smaller ships to travel to distant sectors faster.

Epilogue:
While the universe is generally hostile, entire civilisations have become intertwined by trade and culture.
Now, more than ever citizens can go their own way and make a name and fortune for themselves. What are you waiting for?
Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.
