T 16:33:19:345 UTC – (Chief Technical Officer – CTO Jones) On my way Trev be there in a minute.
T 16:34:22:871 UTC – (CTO Jones) Hey Trev. What’s up?
T 16:34:25:236 UTC – (SC Wilson) Relay 21 is reporting a strong magnetic disturbance. Out beyond Pluto’s orbit.
T 16:34:32:139 UTC – (CTO Jones) How close?
T 16:34:35:319 UTC – (SC Wilson) You tell me. Look at the readings. Its either very close to the relay or very very very big.
T 16:34:52:351 UTC – (CTO Jones) Well R21 is almost 2 billion kilometers away from here so to us it will look like the point of disturbance is right next door.
T 16:35:10:567 UTC – (SC Wilson) So?
T 16:35:12:562 UTC – (CTO Jones) well judging by those numbers to R21 it’s gonna feel like someone filled its pants with iron filings and tossed it into a particle accelerator.
T 16:35:19:198 UTC – (SC Wilson) That bad eh?
T 16:35:25:400 UTC – (CTO Jones) Yep. Let’s send some maneuver orders to R21 and get it to retire to a safer distance and let’s send a message back home and see what they want to do.
T 16:35:45:023 UTC – (SC Wilson) Sounds good to me. I’ll send the maneuver orders, you phone home.
T 16:35:51:823 UTC – (CTO Jones) No worries.
T 16:35:58:212 UTC – (SC Wilson) I think we have a few beers left from the last supply drop. You want one?
T 16:36:07:792 UTC – (CTO Jones) Cheers.

Project Coleman: A manned mission to explore the Heliopause and the boundary of interstellar space

Proposal presented at the emergency project meeting regarding the Pluto disturbance

Date: 24-Jan-2148

Premise: Adjustment of mission parameters to include the close investigation of the Pluto disturbance

Executive Summary:
This proposal adjusts the mission parameters of Project Coleman from solely investigating the Heliopause and the boundary between the Solar System and interstellar space to include the investigation of the magnetic disturbance identified and recorded by the Neptune Research Station. The location of the disturbance can be reached with a 0.02% course deviation for the Coleman Project vessel and can be included in the mission with no compromise of expected results from original mission parameters. Transition via the Neptune Lane and then on to the Outer Reaches Lane will result in the arrival of the Coleman vehicle at a mere 100,000 kilometers from the center of the disturbance. A 0.12% plane shift in trajectory will allow a close fly-by of the disturbance which will allow detailed analysis to be performed.

Press Release

International Agency for Space Exploration

03 September 2148

IASE with regret inform the world that the Project Coleman Exploration Vehicle sent a distress call that initiated at 6:40am on the 11th August from the vicinity of Pluto’s orbit. The distress call ceased to transmit fourteen seconds later and since that time there has been no response to any attempts to reestablish communication with the mission. The families of the three crew have been informed. Further investigations are underway and we will release more information as it comes to hand. No questions will be taken at this time. Thankyou for your attention.

Excerpt from the Final Report from the enquiry into the loss of the Project Coleman Exploration Vehicle

For Public Distribution

01-July-2149

The lack of physical evidence and the difficulty in gathering additional data leads this panel to return an open finding. It is possible that the mission experienced a catastrophic failure caused by human error. However the exemplary career history and unblemished records of MC Li, MP Lecras and MS Johnson make that unlikely. The available evidence indicates that the mission was endangered by its unexpected exit from the Neptune Acceleration Lane in close proximity to the anomaly. Readings taken by remote probes indicate that very high levels of gravitational and magnetic forces were at play within close proximity to the anomaly. It is to this evidence that the panel has given greatest weight in its determination that in all probability the PCEV mission failure was caused by factors outside human control and that no responsibility can be attached to any individual. However, even with this determination the panel is unable to draw a firm conclusion and so the investigation is herewith closed on the date of this report and signed by all members as representing all the available evidence and inference that can reliably be drawn. And with our signatures so do we state.

T 07:58:49:298 UTC (MC Li) Thankyou Mr Johnson. Mr Lecras – Look through the data we have gathered and see what you can find. I’ll run some simulations to see if I can determine what happened when we entered the anomaly.

T 09:21:04:522 UTC – (Mission Commander – MC Li) So. Let us recap what we’ve found. Mr Lecras?
T 09:21:12:138 UTC – (Master Pilot – MP Lecras) The data as we entered the anomaly indicates we were captured by a gravitational force that increased logarithmically as we moved towards the center. This dropped off dramatically when we reached the center and then a few seconds later the measures go haywire and oscillate randomly with no mathematical patterns discernible until it all settles down just after the estimated time that we blacked out. We’ll need to push all the data we have through the super computer clusters back home before we can make any real sense of it all. All I can say right now is that we have experienced something that is outside any models of the way the universe works that I am familiar with. Sorry. Not much help eh?
T 09:22:13:439 UTC – (MC Li) That’s fine Mr Lecras. Mr Johnson?
T 09:22:24:807 UTC – (Mission Scientist – MS Johnson) This won’t make much sense but here it is. The star cluster analysis indicates we have are about 7 and half light years from the Solar System.
T 09:22:32:017 UTC – (MP Lecras) What? Impossible.
T 09:22:39:149 UTC – (MC Li) Thankyou Mr Lecras. Please continue Mr Johnson.
T 09:22:44:017 UTC – (MS Johnson) I know. I don’t really believe it myself but that is what the analysis indicates. I found the Sun but it is no longer the brightest object in our sky. That honour belongs to Wolf 359 with Barnards Star a close second. By triangulating our position with reference to our Sun, and the other local bright objects the computer is telling me we are 7 light years from home and we appear to be located within the planetary system surrounding Wolf 359.
T 09:23:36:530 UTC (MP Lecras) Well that explains the odd readings from our external sensors. If you compare the readings to those we saw before we entered the Neptune Acceleration Lane you find them quite different. They seem to support the fact that we are no longer in our own Solar System.
T 09:23:56:282 UTC – (MC Li) Thankyou. The simulations I have run aren’t giving me much information. But they agree with Mr Lecras analysis up to the point where we blacked out. I did review the command deck video feed and it shows us slumping in our seats and a second or so later a blue white light washes out the video for about half an hour before the vision returns to normal and a few minutes later Mr Johnson wakes up and revives us.
T 09:24:22:249 UTC (MP Lecras) This makes no sense. Assuming we just jumped 7 light years then we’ve broken all of the laws of relativity. And we should also see some pretty dramatic shifts in our time reference as well. Ships clock indicates a steady tick since we started out from the Earth. Johnson, can we get a time estimate from astrological reference?
T 09:24:39:199 UTC (MS Johnson) I thought about that, but as we don’t have a fixed measurement point any shifts in time reference will be meaningless. The only way we could work it out was if we had a relative time shift from a fixed origin point such as the Neptune Research Station or the Neptune Acceleration Lane embarkation Point and we don’t. Or to be exact we can’t because we are so far away.
T 09:25:15:487 UTC (MC Li) Alright. So we are 7 light years from home and we’ve possibly been subjected to a positive or negative time reference shift. So I think we need to make some decisions about our next move. Mr Lecras would you please double check Mr Johnson’s findings and also inventory our resources.
T 09:25:23:822 (MP Lecras) On it.
T 09:25:26:128 (MC Li) Mr Johnson would you please run some simulations reversing our transition through the anomaly and hypothesize what might happen if we were to go through it again?
T 09:25:38:081 (MS Johnson) Will do.
T 09:25:40:622 (MC Li) Thankyou both.

Andrews, John, Illanois, Chicago (Cust): Yes?
ServiceBot: We have you and your wife, Alice, as travelling on the 5th March to our Mars Virgin Resort.
Cust: Correct.
ServiceBot: Unfortunately Mr Andrews we will have to reschedule your visit to the resort. A failure in our water recycling systems means that the resort has had to be shut down while a replacement is transported from Earth and installed.
Cust: Oh no. That was my anniversary. I’ve booked the holidays from work, someone to look after the cat and someone to maintain the house and garden.
ServiceBot: VEV is terribly sorry for this inconvenience and if you decide not to reschedule we will of course refund your deposits.
Cust: Alice was really looking forward to this.
ServiceBot: I am sure. It is a once in a lifetime experience. Perhaps I could interest you in transferring your trip to one of our other space experiences?
Cust: Like what?
ServiceBot: On the 7th March we have a trip that is heading out to the orbit of Pluto by way of the planet Neptune. It will be using the Neptune Acceleration Lane which recently reopened all the way out to Pluto. The trip will return through the asteroid belt. This is a 5 day round trip and will allow you to see Saturn’s rings. It doesn’t stop in any one place but will be a fantastic experience.
Cust: Can you send me some eBrochures and then call me back tomorrow? I’d like to discuss it with Alice if you don’t mind.
ServiceBot: Of course.
Cust: And what would the cost be?
ServiceBot: It normally costs 1 point 5 million Euro Dollars per person for the trip but because of the inconvenience VEV will discount that amount back to the price of your original ticket to the Mars Virgin Resort.
Cust: Well that sounds fair. Can you please call me back tomorrow and I’ll let you know what Alice and I would like to do?
ServiceBot: Of course Mr Andrews, and again please accept VEV’s apology for the inconvenience.
Cust: Thanks.

T 13:16:21:285 UTC – (Mission Commander – MC Li) So I think we have all the data we need to make a decision. Mr Lecras would you summarise please?
T 13:16:31:387 UTC – (Master Pilot – MP Lecras) Oui. We have confirmed our location. We are over 7 light years from the Solar System and our Sun.
T 13:16:36:720 UTC – (Mission Scientist – MS Johnson) And we have no idea what our time reference is.
T 13:16:42:175 UTC – (MP Lecras) Yes. We have enough power for about another 12 months on normal usage before our fusions cell electrical generators will give out. Our chemical propellant is good for another 14 hours of constant maneuvering, give or take. Our magnetic lane synchronisation engines are off so they aren’t drawing power but they’ll be fine as long as we have enough electricity to trigger them when we need them. But we’ll run out of food at best in one month and our water and water recycling will last us about three months.
T:13:17:20:491 UTC – (MC Li) Thankyou Mr Lecras. Mr Johnson?
T 13:17:26:012 UTC – (MS Johnson) So I’ve figured out that it was a very high burst of electro-magnetic radiation that caused us to lose consciousness. It is nothing to worry about right now but we’ve probably all had some fairly significant neurological damage as a result. This may result in long term memory degradation and early onset of brain illness such as Alzheimer’s disease. There is treatment available back on Earth that will limit the damage we have already suffered so if we can get back there we should be OK.
T 13:17:54:833 UTC – (MP Lecras) Super.
T 13:17:57:744 UTC – (MS Johnson) I know. Anyway it appears that the anomaly is some sort of wormhole in time and space. The simulations indicate that the ship at least will survive a second transition if it is similar to the first with some room to spare. There is no significant hull damage from stress and we can power the shields for another transition without too much trouble.
T 13:18:15:371 UTC – (MC Li) And what about us? Will we survive another blast of that radiation?
T 13:18:24:911 UTC – (MS Johnson) I don’t know Commander. The simulations can only give me some certainty regarding the ship itself. It is likely that the radiation burst will the of the same magnitude and from what I now about electro-magnetic radiation the effects are cumulative. This means that any damage already done will be made worse by further exposure. Whether that would be enough to incapacitate us or kill us outright, or render us unable to operate the ship systems I don’t know.
T 13:19:02:338 UTC – (MC Li) Thankyou Mr Johnson. Well we don’t really have much of a choice do we? It’s either stay here and die of starvation or attempt a transit through the wormhole and hope it gets us home alive, and with enough brain function to recognise our families.
T 13:19:28:731 UTC – (MP Lecras) Merde.
T 13:19:31:377 UTC – (MC Li) Just do your job Mr Lecras. You too Mr Johnson. If we do our jobs we maximise our chances. Ok?
T 13:19:43:777 UTC – (MS Johnson) Ok.
T 13:19:56:833 UTC – (MC Li) Ok Mr Lecras?
T 13:20:02:633 UTC – (MC Li) Mr Lecras?
T 13:20:05:810 UTC – (MP Lecras) Ok. But I’m going to record a message for my family before we do anything else.
T 13:20:18:519 UTC – (MC Li) Good idea. I will as well. Mr Johnson?
T 13:20:27:387 UTC – (Mr Johnson) Yep. So will I.
T 13:20:35:822 UTC – (MC Li) Ok. Record your messages and then begin your preparation for the attempt to transit the wormhole again. We will plan to attempt the transit at 0300 hours. Do your jobs and we’ll be OK.
