Even so, sigh. Apparently any technology more advanced than stone knives and bearskins is at risk.

Yep.

Although I would offer the same advice to ANYONE on Solaris, Oracle are pretty crap about fixing things in the best of times.
It has some nice use-cases, but it causes more hassle than it's worth.
