CryEngine

-So I've been looking into this thing. It says it's 100% royalty free. Far as I know, that means that under no circumstances am I obliged to pay a penny, unless I want some certain fancypants services that I'll never need anytime soon. :squirrel:
-Also it seems you can use C# now.
-Except apparently I don't really have to because it has visual scripting for game logic. :ghost:
-Also everyone knows its graphics are some of the best. :geek:
-Publishes to fewer platforms than Unity, but it can do Windows and Linux, which is all I care about. :twisted:
-Dunno about performance though. I'm fully aware that the people here are likely to instantly say "Everything's faster than Unity" and likely that's true :ghost: but I need to know how it's gonna be performing anyway. "Faster than Unity" does not say all that much because Unity is butt-draggingly slow. :shifty:
-It has a documentation/manual. That's good. :ugeek:
Something I always liked about CryTek: they make their own games with this thing. Unity Technologies has never, as far as I know, actually released a major title. Just tutorials and demos. :monkey:

Anything else I should likely know about this thing? It's sounding like it'd be a good thing to use for my larger, less sane projects like my space game. 8-) Unity would still be good for random hobbying since I bet it's simpler to use.

Crytek make cool tech. It's not wrong to consider CryEngine for a graphics-intensive 3D-world game.

That said, if I were seriously looking for an engine for a game, I'd think twice about CryEngine right now. Not because of the tech, or the licensing, but because CryTek has been reported as having financial problems for the last couple of years.

This story from December 2016, for example, describes CryTek having trouble paying employees. And this story from early February 2017 describes layoffs at numerous CryTek offices, including their home office in Frankfurt.

This doesn't mean "don't use CryEngine." It's just information I've seen recently that you might want to be aware of if you're researching engines for a game.

Good luck!

Im also pretty sure that they'll demand a cut once you make money with their engine :ghost:

2.4. Restrictions on Use: Crytek reserves all rights not expressively granted in this Agreement. Without limitation, Licensee shall not:
  • use the CryEngine for the development of any product other than Games, including without limitation:
    • military projects
    • gambling;
    • simulation (technical, scientific, other);
    • science;
    • architecture;
    • pornography;
    • Serious Games.
  • use the CryEngine for the development of any Games which are harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, vulgar, sexually explicit, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, or in a reasonable person's view, objectionable;
  • copy, replicate or mimic Crytek's games;
  • use CryEngine for applications that are unlawful or offensive under applicable laws;
  • use the CryEngine to develop cheats, hacks or similar applications;
So long as your game is none of the above, your should be fine. :V
Mostly the licence actually looks pretty fair. So go for gold.
