Oh hey looks, its something similar to my pareidolic icons....
http://media.theluminarium.net/images/1396609075.jpg

but more human and not quite.... but pareidolic shards of cystal that come together to form a vaguely facelike thing, now there's an idea, hmmm...

Yes its all 3d rendered in 3ds max except fake volumetric godrays, they were done in post :D About polycount its hard to say exact number, I mean its just stupid-big number. But I can clearly recall that one asteroid is around 1-4M poly's depending on size. Total number of asteroids are around 4M. Asteroids are procedurally generated in terms of shape, position, rotation and ext. Most of the work was in post.

Forgot to mention most important part, that I used geometry instancing for asteroids, there is only 32 unique asteroids in scene, rest is just duplicates scattered in ring area field. That was a trick that helped a lot to dodge running out of ram problem. Render time was 40~ mins, output 18 passes. Post-processing was done in Photoshop. If you interested in post compositing I can PM .PSD file for a closer look.

Nice scene and epic JJ. Abrams style lens flare, can't go wrong with them :D What software you using?
