Simple: post your favorite artists! Would love to know what you guys are listening to...and possibly add it to my development playlist :)

Here are my favorite artists that I'll update from time-to-time. They're all on the LT dev playlist. I use Apple Music FYI, which, shameless plug, has totally blown Spotify out of the water for me (and I was hardcore Spotify since the beginning..). My criteria for the playlist is basically: I can have it on in my office and if at any point someone walks in to chat, they must feel more relaxed when they walk out :D So far I've gotten good feedback on that.

Green for highest recommendations.

oh lordy where to start

well right now I am listening to Fucking Werewolf Asso! Weird noisy synth punk stuff, reminiscent of Melt-Banana at times.

I've also been listening to a lot of Andrew Jackson Jihad! Folky punk is the best punk. The album People That Can Eat People Are The Luckiest People In The World is excellent through and through, and their latest album Knife Man is excellent as well.

bunch of other folk punk stuff too, the Hail Seizures, Blackbird Raum, Brown Bird, Ghost Mice would be some of my favs!

Porcupine Tree, awww yeah.
Tool is of course a staple of my musical taste, as is Radiohead.

And I'd be a terrible person if I didn't mention the IDMforums Netlabel! label.idmforums.com, tons of free music by excellent electronic musicians of all kinds! Some of my favs are Morpion, No Floors, Xpurm, Jazzyspoon, IG88... but they're all awesome!

what else... The Number 12 Looks Like you for mathy hardcore goodness, HORSE the Band for general awesomeness and being the most badass band around, Rolo Tomassi... The Mountain Goats, The Books, the Knife... Tom Waits, Tomahawk, Skinny Puppy, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum...

Mh, this'll show my age. *sigh* And I've not aged gracefully, either.

There's a few things from the Hard & Heavy side of things I'm fond of...
Iron Maiden
Manowar (only if tipsy or playing Skyrim, though)
Blue Öyster Cult
Deep Purple
Led Zeppelin

And a few of the more...errr...electronic offerings...
Thomas Dolby
Jean Michel Jarré
Vangelis
Giorgio Moroder
Alan Parson's Project
Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Hey, look, a pirate song!)
Electric Light Orchestra
Beborn Beton
Covenant
Wolfsheim

And of course, the more "mainstream" stuff
Bob Seger
Bruce Springsteen
Manfred Mann
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Kate Bush
Mike Oldfield
Mike Batt
Jethro Tull

And the folky stuff...
Clannad
Loreena McKennitt
Heather Dale
Heather Alexander/Alexander James Adams (Both are the same person)

*looks at list*
Heck, I'm officially old.

Why not a continuous loop of Hoedowns and Irish Drinking Songs from Whose Line?
Actually, that'd be a terrible idea. No-one could ever do anything productive while listening to that.

Socci and Pency from Youtube have some nice acoustic stuff.

-Ratatat

-Parov Stelar

EDIT: I'm checking out Emancipator and I love it...

Phew..
I think you are poking a stick at a wasp nest here, Josh.
Everyone has his/hers/its favorite kind of music.
You may expect long lists of all (and I mean ALL) sorts of music ranging from the Carpenters to Rammstein.

That said, spacesims traditionally feature a kind of new-agey dreamy creamy and other words that end on y kind of music.
Listening to it for more than a few nanoseconds usually makes my bowels try to creep out of my nose and hide in a shoe.
You may want to go for something different.
There are quite a few free internet music streams up and running on the internet.
You could incorporate them ingame and have players tune in to the musicstream of their choice.

- It would free up time for you by not having to program the music.
- Everyone gets the music he/she/it likes
- The ingame music will not be limited to a few tunes.
- It will be an entirely new approach to music in a game.

Depending on my mood, it's either any soundtrack music, usually being Lord of the Rings, or anything by 'Two steps from hell' - which is really nothing like it sounds like it would.. sound like.

Other times, it's Metallica, Paramore, Green Day, Pierce the Veil, Rise Against, Iron Maiden, The Offspring, or Parkway Drive.

Speakingof music and space games, I sometimes fire up EvE just to listen to the music. It astonishes me how well it has held up after nearly a decade.

I have found many of my favourites here already, except for
  • Daniel Licht (the Dexter Soundtrack among other things)
  • Nightwish (old Nightwish - no, I'm not arguing, just stating =)
  • Chris Hülsbeck. Lots of old game music tracks like Turrican. There are quite a few remixes, too.
  • the occasional piece of game-related music like RA3 soviet march, RA3 Remix, Golden Axe

Eve is amazing in every aspect, and music is not an exception...

Imagine my surprise when I was watching a documentary by the European Space Agency on space probes, and I realized the background music was the EvE soundtrack!

Surprised no one's mentioned Aphex Twin up to this point.
I know his more ambient stuff has been used in gaming ad nauseam, but still.

In addition to him,
Boards of Canada (of course)
Flying Lotus
Chris Clark, also goes by just plain Clark (something about everything he makes gives off such a space-y vibe)
Teebs (love that guy~)
Autechre
Lukid
Nebulo
Populous With Short Stories
Shlohmo
Squarepusher
Tim Hecker (props to alpan for mentioning him)
Tycho
μ-ziq
Venetian Snares (because who WOULDN'T want to cruise around space blasting that? ...okay, maybe a lot of people)
Grouper
Tangerine Dream (for a classic)
Ceephax Acid Crew

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
