Re: Music!
Pony music. Way too much Pony music.
Alex S 20% Cooler. (Currently my favorite song, and nothing seems to be able to shake that.)
Alex S Party with Pinkie.
Alex S Ultimate Sweetie Belle.
Names are off-putting, but I'll be damned if I haven't converted dozens of people to it.

Re: Music!
I'm into clasic progressive rock. Someone all ready mentioned Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ( Brain Salad Surgery comes to mind) But there is also clasic Yes: Relayer, The Gates of Delirium and Close to the Edge, the title track. Something a little more jazz oriented: Return to forever, Romantic Warrior. Or perhaps a little bit more metal in nature: Joe Satriani, Surfing with the Alien and Not of This earth. Or if you're into brass, try Bill Chase, Pure Music or clasic Chicago.
Cowards die many times before their deaths, the valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders that I have seen, it seem to me most strange, that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come.

Re: Music!
I've swung back around to a lot more Skinny Puppy the past little bit, especially because there's a certain song of theirs have started working on covering, now that I have my new ESX1 sampler handy. :D
Also I think I can feel a Tool phase coming on... feels good man.

Re: Music!
I haven't really been in a single music kick. I've been listening to a little of everything I have. Some rap(MGK and some old Thousand Foot Krutch), rock(Stone Sour and Linkin Park), nu metal(Limp Bizkit), Dubmetal(Korn's new stuff), and whatever else I have is, haha.

It's so old it's actually music, not just a randomly generated series of screams and sounds. =P

Re: Music!
I'm pretty eclectic, but mostly I listen to:
Avantasia
Pain
Delain
Apocalyptica
Evanescence
Nightwish
Epica
Within Temptation
Tarja
Linkin Park
Concerning action/combat music, I feel that metal or techno can work well. Though, honestly, I usually turn off music in games.

Re: Music!
I'd even suggest throwing in a bit of Shostakovich - even older than AC/DC (unless the rumours are true ), and guaranteed to add major tension.

For being in alone in space, a long way from anywhere, you could do a Kubrick and have some Khatchaturian.

Re: Music!
I don't think that techno is a good choice because it comes with a high degree of monotony. For music that you listen to for "a while" that's sub-optimal.Katorone wrote:Concerning action/combat music, I feel that metal or techno can work well.

Re: Music!
Mh, combat music, eh? Let me dig up some classics from my pen&paper sessions long ago (10 years...so yeah, it's a tad bit dated ^^). And yeah, it's a rather wierd selection, spanning genres and players. Also, most combat tracks only work with decent bass, to be honest. Lyrics strictly optional, in my opinion it's mostly about a proficiently thumping bass line.JoshParnell wrote:On the music side, I'm still trying to figure out how to get the blood pumping. But, as you said. It needs a bass, and probably a higher tempo too. I can recognize epic music but I have no idea what makes epic music sound epic.
Re: Music!
Maybe I'm thinking more about (instrumental/melodic) trance. I have to admit that I don't really get all the differences.Gazz wrote:I don't think that techno is a good choice because it comes with a high degree of monotony. Re: Music!
Well, if we're throwing in the kitchen sink , here's a few more. Not just combat, but general being-in-space music.
Does it really happen - Yes
On n'est pas comme ca - Silmarils
Till Victory - Patti Smith
Ao longe o mar - Madredeus
Rachel's song - Vangelis
Kashmir - Led Zep
Don't you ever - Republica
Lucifer - Alan Parson Project
Abacab - Genesis
Oblivion - Astor Piazzolla
Stupid girl - Garbage
Surfing with the alien - Joe Satriani
Vltava - Smetana
Night train - Steve Winwood
Uranus the Magician - Holst
Mind you, getting suitable rights to a lot of commercial music could be costly/difficult.
It might be worth allowing players to use their own music e.g. define a playlist, or several playlists for different activities. An in-game track selector would be the icing on that cake!

Re: Music!
I think Josh is looking for a "definition" of epic combat music, so he can write some himself.
Basically he needs to notice the characteristics and he can start writing.

Re: Music!
Is there still hope for dynamically created music?
I know that dubstep is not the most favorite music on the earth but it can be extremely violent.
See Dubstep-Guns for instance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... m4S4#t=54s
The creators of this song (klaypex) are not bad either in their other songs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... WfGA#t=89s
It's just begging to be the sound being played when the big cannons go hot!
