I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off, I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in
The only good fnord is a dead fnord!

Wow, interesting!
Apparently, sometimes stuff might happen.

Astronomers have discovered an object that could be the first known moon located beyond the Solar System. If genuine, the "exomoon" is likely to be about the size and mass of Neptune, and circles a planet the size of Jupiter but with 10 times the mass.

So I was reading into the original Shenmue on the Dreamcast, in particular what data is recorded in a save file, and it's a lot more than you'd think.

If you're not familiar with the Shenmue, it's an open-world detective-style game where most of the game involves talking to people to find clues and learn stuff about the story, with some martial arts stuff on the side. That description doesn't do the game justice, as all of the greatness comes with the story and the sheer interactivity of the world, but it'll give you an idea of what actually needs to be saved in the game.

Here's what's actually saved in the game (note that only things that are in bold can actually be seen by the player):
Spoiler:      SHOW
  • Total gameplay time
  • Present date and time
  • Present area (note that the game can only be saved in Ryo's room, so this is useless)
  • Present goal (equivalent to my "current story state", except it also includes a text string!)
  • Time spent on current quest (how long the present goal has been the present goal)
  • Current money total
  • Number of times saved
  • Number of times help used (= number of times game was paused)
  • Number of times notebook used
  • Number of conversations
  • Number of searches
  • Number of times lock-on achieved
  • Total movement time
  • Total idle time
  • Number of times walls hit
  • Number of QTE challenges
  • Number of QTE successes
  • Average QTE input reaction speed
  • Number of opponents defeated
  • Move mastery
  • Number of practice sessions (for each of the four different practice areas)
  • Number of events with kitten
  • Number of times feeding the kitten (for each of the six different foods)
  • Number of times petting the kitten
  • Number of times calling the kitten's name
  • Number of times looking at the kitten
  • Name of the kitten
  • Age of the kitten (note that this information reveals that the kitten is 49 days old when you first see it on December 3rd, 1986 - which means the kitten was born on October 15th, 1986)
  • Body length of the kitten
  • Weight of the kitten
  • Total amount of bus fares
  • Number of bus rides (interestingly, these two increase with off-screen bus travel too)
  • Number of phone calls made (for each of the four different phones)
  • Number of raffle drawings (for each of the three different stores)
  • Number of times each prize has been awarded (for each of the three different stores)
  • Items
  • Total amount of money spent shopping (for each of the three different stores)
  • Items purchased (from each of the three different stores)
  • Total amount of money spent on vending machines
  • Total amount of drinks bought (for each of the five different types of drink)
  • Number of winning cans
  • Total amount of money spent on move scrolls
  • Move scrolls bought
  • Items collected (found, as opposed to bought or won)
  • Events triggered
  • Doors opened
  • Rooms visited
  • Landmarks seen
  • People spoken to
  • People seen
  • Current weather
  • Weather forecast for tomorrow
  • High scores for all arcade games
  • Last scores for all arcade games
  • Number of times playing an arcade game (for each of the six different arcade games)
  • Time spent playing arcade games (for each of the six different arcade games)
  • Prizes won by playing arcade games
  • Number of Slot Machine tokens
  • Number of tokens won on a slot machine
  • Number of tokens spent on a slot machine
  • Number of times spinning the reels on a slot machine
  • Number of times winning tokens on a slot machine (for each of the eight winning combinations)
  • Time spent on a slot machine
  • Prizes won by playing on a slot machine
  • High scores for 70 Man Battle
  • Number of times playing 70 Man Battle
  • Time spent playing 70 Man Battle
  • High scores for forklift racing
  • Number of times playing forklift racing
  • Time spent playing forklift racing
  • Prizes won by forklift racing
  • Number of jukebox songs requested (for each song that can be played on a jukebox - fortunately this isn't split by jukebox too)
  • Music tracks heard
  • Cutscenes viewed
I feel like that might be slightly overkill.
Games I like, in order of how much I like them.
