If you make the best AI possible and make this available only to "bosses" then the trick is to get convincing artificial stupidity so that the lesser ships miss more than they hit for instance. But not make it look like they are intentionally missing.

Ships don't need to be symmetrical. Planet landing has already been ruled out as far as I can see so you don't need to worry about them being aerodynamic either. Literally anything goes but you would want some kind of constraints in place. Perhaps if a ship part is designated the bridge or cockpit y...
