We are near stage 4 it seems.

Bought some time. Now he can stay quiet another 2-3 months, before people start to going mad again.

If i had to guess: he realized, making a good game engine is not enough to make a good game. and that for a good game he would probably need another 2 years. so he went dark, because that was clearly not the plan. let's check again in 2 years.
but then again, i'm just guessing stuff because it's fun.
