Re: Making mining fun

I do like the idea of a mining rig installed into a ship, where you simply set the vessel down and let the drilling rig go to work. Then again, I could also imagine a "space dredger" (anybody remember the reference in the Elite manual?) that tractors in complete asteroids to devour and refine. I li...

Re: Interplanetary Highways, Trade Lanes, Acceleration Gates

From the look of the gates/lanes in the videos/screenshots, they should be relatively easy to drop in and out of. It looks rather like a pneumatic tube system, where a force would be pushing you along within the lane, so if you drop out of the lane you will slow down; if you pop back in, you will s...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

As for intra-system jumping, sure, I don't see why not. If you can use your jump drive to jump into other systems, I certainly don't see why you couldn't use it to jump between planets! :) There may be circumstances where you don't want it to happen e.g. it would be too easy for a bunch of warships...

Re: Steam?

To be honest, I wouldn't worry overly much. No company is ever going to get away with leaving players completely unable to play their game from a legal point of view. I hate to break it to you, but: http://www.ea.com/1/service-updates http://boingboing.net/2008/09/26/walmart-shutting-dow.html http:...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

Hello all, you guys are masterful investigators :) Yes, they're "trade lanes," although I will stick to calling them acceleration gates from now on to avoid being too much like Freelancer! They are for fast intra-system travel between points of interest in systems. No, they won't be in every system...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

I suppose they do have that nice side effect, don't they? ;) I'm sure they will be added, based on everything I've seen thus far. However, I'd really like them to not be the sole practical option for intra-system travel in LT. If LT were like Freelancer, travel would basically be limited to (1) flyi...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

My first response to those gates are "STARGATES!!" I'm putting my bet on those being inter-system jumpgates. While I'm sure there will be inter-system jumpgates, I believe the gates we've seen (several sets of double rings arranged in a line) are intra-system trade lanes. Josh's dev blog seems to s...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

Perhaps there will be some naurual wormholes to uncharted systems ? Exactly - or even jumpgates that lead to systems that haven't been fully civilized yet. And Josh has said we can equip an (albeit expensive) jump drive, which (I believe) won't rely on existing jump gates. Not all systems should be...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

Psttt, there is this funny looking round gate thing half way trough the last tech demo viedo. ;) Psssst, they were already in plain sight in the initial Kickstarter video. ;) (starting at 2:16, and again at 3:31) Also, Josh has called them "trade lane gates" in his development blog as far back as A...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

They are indeed highways inside the system. We'll have jump gates, jump drives and wormholes for traveling between systems. Fantastic. Although, one thing I didn't like so much about Freelancer is that they lanes were pretty much the only practical way to travel between planets and other destinatio...

Re: Interplanetary Highways

Are these 'trade lanes' between systems or are they highways inside the system or are they both? The way there are several sets of double rings aligned linearly and pretty close together, they look more like my understanding of intra-system travel than inter-system. But I could be totally wrong abo...
